Would only start in Neutral....

When I got off of work tonight, my car would not start when I turned the key; it didn't even turn over. Being that it was 11pm, I was initially concerned, but quickly realized that the radio and the lights worked without any problems. Remembering previous posts, I put the car in neutral and bingo the car started right up. When I parked the car early this morning, I didn't turn the car off in drive or anything, and it didn't stall while I was parking it.

So what gives?

Try all the positions... if it doesn't start in park but it starts in neutral it sounds like a neutral safety start switch problem. Follow the wires down the firewall to the transmision, its on the drivers side attatched onto the lever (attached to a long rod that goes to the gear selector lever in the car).

It could be the switch as has been suggested.Try pushing forward on the shifter lever while it's in park as you try to start the car.If it starts, then you probably just have a piece of carpet or something blocking the lever from fully engaging the park position.I've seen that a bunch of times.Good luck!

Try Veronica's suggestion. When I reassembled Lolita's trans, I got the neutral safety switch adjusted a teeny bit off. I sometimes have to push the shifter forward a little to start the car in Park. It's such a non-problem I haven't bothered to fix it.
