Alright...

I've been on here a few times in the last couple weeks about my nightmare of a tranny...that was not so bad after all:

It is a T-10 4 speed with the standard 'slip out of 3rd gear' problem' that locked up on me in the end of March. It turned out to be an easy fix once I droped the unit out...Shift trunions engaged at the same time...BIG thanx to Matt_at_TH...and now I think I have a servicible unit...but for how long...who knows???

Here is my dilema...$$$ is not growing on trees...as you all know...and I have to imagine that after the negotiations ends with SWMBO it would be a while until I can hook up a Toploader or even a T-5...so, WHAT WOULD YOU DO???

A. For $150.00 get a master rebuild kit...not including some hook sliders...and rebuild it (not a dailer driver...I have the time and, more importantly, patience)...hoping it would last 2-3 years...or

B. Nurse the girl until next year with no more $$$ into the tranny, and put a new spine in her then...

I can see the benefits of both, but man...I just dont know. It's a relatively new project for me, and I would love to make sure this is a reliable vehicle to drive some moderate distances this summer. It would also be nice to save some $$$ and put it into other thinigs the car needs.

So, any of you VMF Knights who have traveled this path...I would love any help you may wish to bestow on this young pauper who is humbly asking for your assistance. ::

Nurse the trans until you can save enough to get what you want. I have driven my car as far away as 800 miles 1 way, no tools required and like mastercard says, Priceless. But I waited until I had the money to get what I wanted. Remember its a 40 year old car paitience, you can drive to show it or drive then be towed. Good luck

Well,

Make plans to have someone watch the kids for the weekend. Stop by the jewlery store and pic up something nice for SWMBO and don't worry about the money. Give her one day's notice and tell her you want to take her out to dinner and spend some quality time with her alone for the weekend. Have a good meal, give her the shiny stuff, arrange for someone to bring flowers to her at the table, take her home and show her how much you appreciate her. Go out the next day and order a new T5Z conversion, she would want you to have it....

I was in the same boat, only my T10 drops out of 2nd under hard decelleration. I found the right toploader for my year at a swap meet for $650, and pounced on it. I still have to install shifter rods and stuff, but I have time (car is currently stripped).

I'd run your T10 without master rebuild kit and save your money for a toploader.

I have 2nd gear deceleration drop out as Midlife. I borrowed a Toploader from a friend who installed T5. I did buy masterkit for T10 but haven't started yet because I did some porting and clutch linkage stuff this winter and because I am not convinced that the master kit is right for T10 (it has the number of SuperT10).
I am somewhat limited with modifications because of local laws so I try to keep the remaining original parts in 65FB. But if I were you I would set the sights on T5.
