So the moral is . . have an engine's reciprocating assembly balanced accurately when changing parts internally and externally :)

Absolutely, lesson learned the hard way. Just hope someone else can be saved some trouble from the experience. Now I just need to find an oil pan gasket that will seal and I am good to go.
 
And I know you had this engine done by someone else . . so shame on them !!! But I always insist on a balance when I'm building an engine. Insist meaning to the customer, we need to have this done. It's a couple hundred well spent.

Woot! Good news. Glad it turned out to be fixable. An expensive mistake, but you'll forget the price pretty quickly once you're enjoying the car. Nothing worse than having an issue hanging over the car all the time.
