For the first time yesterday, I had a working alternator on the car and it made things with the MSD strange.
Car started and seemed to run normal. Until you hit about 2500 rpm and the alternator came to life. As soon as you went above 2500 rpm, the tach needle went nuts jumping all over the place and as high a 9k rpm. The engine sounded like it was misfiring as well. Actually, it almost sounds as if I had the soft touch rev limiter module installed, but I don't.
Oh yeah, and in regards to the tach, it is an autometer ultralite 5" tach pluged into the tach terminal of the MSD. And, no tach adaptor needed according to MSD,
Then when you shut down the car, it diesels. Don't know if this is the same type of run on that MSD explains in their instructions, but I don't have an indicating light circuit.
When there is no alternator on the car and it is running purely off the battery, I don't have these problems.
Here is what I have: Tuff Stuff 100Amp 1 wire alternator from Jeggs. It has a mini regulator bolted to the backside of the alt. to make it a 1 wire job. I only have 1 wire running to the alt. on the main post. When it seems to be charging, system voltage seems to run 12-14 volts (which from what i read is in the range of the MSD).
I also have the Crane dizzy triggering the MSD 6AL (mag pick up).
I don't know what to do. I think I may see if I can find that old ballast resistor that was used when I had a straight mallory unilite dizzy in the car. Maybe if I plug that one into the 12v switched power line to the MSD, it will knock things down a bit?
