Can someone post a picture of a standard mirror that would of come on the drivers side of a 66 Coupe from the factory/dealer. There are so many replacement mirrors on the market today and I want to make sure I buy original stock or as close to original as I can. Thanks. Also, does anyone recommend putting a mirror on the passenger side.

Here's what you want...

65-66 STANDARD OUTSIDE MIRROR-BEST QUALITY

That is the correct stock '65-'66 mirror, though Dealer's installed other Ford mirrors of the same era, This is the standard mirror that was most predominately used. Most '65 Mustangs did not even come with any outside mirrors...at all..., so it was usually left up to the selling Ford dealer to install one. By 1966, The Driver's side mirror was more of a standard thing, and usually installed on the car before the dealer got it.

I also suggest that if there is no mirror on your Right Hand (PASSENGER SIDE), Then do not install one if there isn't one there already...Leave it off the Pass side.

PS: The mirror is also installed in a certain position so not to interfere with the operation of the vent windows, so if you need an install template on where to install the holes, We can provide one for you so that your holes are in the right spots. Just ask.

Have Fun!

Big blind spot on my 66 fastback. So I'm considering installing a passenger side mirror.

Looks easy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dabiP57TMA

So why not install one?

Not trying to start an argument. Just want to understand your thinking.

I put a passenger side door mirror on my coupe and love it. Again, be careful where you put it or you won't be able to open the wing window.

I never felt the need for one on the fastback. That huge glass area gives great visibility when backing up.

As long as we're talking mirrors...

The day/night inside mirror in my 66 FB barely covers the back glass. And that's only when my head & the mirror are perfectly positioned.

So I tried the $20 clip-on [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Car-Mate-PL114A-Metallic-Finish/dp/B0028JLO2Y/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1395251222&sr=1-1&keywords=carmate+pl114a"]Carmate PL114A[/ame]. I've had one in my Honda CRV for years.

Kinda nerdy -- like Buddy Holly's eyeglasses -- but I really like the bigger field of vision.

There were 2 mirrors available from Ford in 66 - the standard mirror as noted above and the remote mirror. The remote mirror uses a lever mounted to the door panel and cable to the mirror to adjust the glass.

If you have your original driver's door, you can tell what mirror was originally installed. The standard mirror attaches via 2 screws, so your door would only have 2 screw holes. The remote mirror would have 2 attaching screw holes and a +/- 1/2" diameter hole between the screw holes for the adjusting cable.

I will tell you that my convertible only has a driver's side remote mirror. The lack of a passenger mirror is a headache in traffic, but it didn't come with one originally and that's the way I left it. I would suggest installing a passenger side mirror if originality isn't of the utmost importance to you.

Also to note as mentioned above though the question on this thread was about the "standard mirror", The upgrade to the standard mirror was the Deluxe Remote mirror in '65-'66. A special Passenger side Remote Mirror "Dummy" was available to complement the Driver's side if one with a Remote Mirror installed wanted a matching passenger side mirror.

'65-'66 Deluxe "Remote" mirror:

65-66 *SHOW QUALITY*COMPLETE LH REMOTE MIRROR

'65-'66 Deluxe "Remote" mirror Passenger side dummy:

65-66 RH COMPANION TO REMOTE MIRROR *SHOW QUALITY*

*Also to note, '65-'66 cars had their own specific mirrors. '67 and later mirrors were completely different.

Although I do not recommend installing one unless the car actually came with it, Below is a picture of the #2 most popular installed "Standard" Mustang mirror so people know what it looks like. Lots of the mirror below were installed on 1965 Mustangs and even early '66's. This is just as reference info unless you are really gung-ho on installing one. It is also a Ford "Rotunda" mirror as were all the others.

Thanks for the information guys. After some further internet research, I found the mirror that was on my 66 coupe was a FOMOCO C3AB17743, which according to what I have found was for 1964-65 Mustangs and 1963-1965 Galaxie multi models. I found nothing that says they were ever installed on the 66 Mustangs. NEFeurora, where did you find that info about this mirror being installed on some early 66's? My car was born on 16 March 1966, 7 months after the start of production. What are your thoughts on putting this mirror back on my pony?

The C3AB17743 mirror was on my driver's door of my 64 1/2 Coupe when I bought her in 2003. I'm not saying that it came with the car originally but it's possible. A standard mirror like the one in NEF's link was on the passenger door. I managed to get a matching C3AB17743 mirror for the passenger side instead of going with two new standard mirrors. It's possible that the C3AB17743 mirror on my driver's door was original to the car. Plus I like them because they have the FOMOCO imprint.

"I found nothing that says they were ever installed on the 66 Mustangs. NEFaurora, where did you find that info about this mirror being installed on some early 66's?"

And you won't find anything either...Not everything is in print, though I can say, that I am surprised that it's not since the '63-'65 Galaxie standard mirror was so prevelant on early '65-'66 mustangs. By late '66, You really don't see the '63-'65 Galaxie standard mirror being used anymore on the mustang, at least from the factory...Dealers probably still installed them though.

When you've stripped as many original '65-'66 mustang cars as I have in the past 27 years, and seen as many original unrestored cars, Certain "trends" start to form. I have also seen many original '65-'66's that were installed with the '63-'65 Galaxie standard mirror, and as I said, that was the #2 most popular "standard" mirror installed on most '65-'66 mustangs. Though, The "most" popular mirror was the "standard" mirror from the 1963-1965 Ford Falcon. That standard mirror is the one that is found on most mustangs. So, both mirrors are "correct" as far as being original 1965-1966 Ford factory mirrors installed on the 1965-1966 mustang. Both mirrors were Rotunda made branded mirrors.

#Tip-Trick of the month -

Got Mirror flop? Don't let mirror-flop get you down for your original mirror, Fix it, without even having to take the mirror apart!

I have found a nice way to fix mirror-flop over the years. Read below!

What to do:

Coat the mirror swivel ball with 5-minute epoxy and get in the car and move the mirror into the correct position before it dries. Now, You can do two things here, Just let the epoxy dry on the ball in place, and the mirror won't move and stay in the position you want it, or as the epoxy is drying, slowly move the mirror around until the epoxy dries. The dried epoxy on the ball will provide enough friction so that the mirror will not flop around, yet it can still be moved around slowly.

A great trick! It works! Last for years!

Try it!

PS: The clearer colored the 5-minute epoxy used the better. There are some Epoxy brands out there that are very Yellowish, Stay away from them if you can to avoid any discoloration of the ball when coated.

"I thought driver side door mirrors were manditory starting in the 1940s or early 50s."

Nope.

Probably around 30%-40% of 1965 mustangs came with no driver's side mirror at all. By 1966, It was pretty much standard...for mustangs that is.

That of course does not mean that some states did not make it mandatory in 1965 for a car to have a Driver's side mirror. You'd have to check the state's statues for that year.

I replaced the Montgomery Ward aftermarket mirror on my big Ford with a decent OEM C3 mirror I found on eBay.

It took me awhile to find a gasket that fits. I *think* this the one is what I used; I'm still looking for my receipt.

Honestly, I'd just eyeball it. Just be sure that it's far enough back that the vent window will open and you have a clear line of sight when sitting in the driver's seat.

I used the template and, even though my vent window will open, the mirror is still forward enough that the vent window frame blocks some of the sight line from my eye to the mirror.
