1970 Mustang power steering issues

since the rotisserie restoration I’ve had issues with my power steering. It’s a new steering box all the tie rods, idler arm replaced and the front end aligned. It does have the Shelby drop. The vehicle acts like I do not have any power steering and the wheel does not like to center itself coming out of a turn automatically.

So I thought maybe it’s the new power steering pump it’s been in there for a few years. But the car has barely been driven in that time period.

Following the instructions that came with the pump from national parts depot, I first flushed the pump with new type F transmission fluid per the instructions the pump came with. I then installed the power steering pump hooked up the high-pressure line capped off the return on the pump the reservoir, filled the pump with type f tranny fluid up past the casting partially up the filler tube, then pulled off a coil wire and cranked the motor over while I had an assistant looking underneath at the return line that was uncappedComing from the control valve.

There was no fluid coming out I should say it was just dripping out barely. This was the same problem I was having with the old pump that I replaced with this pump just three days ago. So I’m wondering do I need to cycle the wheels to get the fluid, the new fluid, through the system and then I should start seeing fluid come out of the return line?

Or is there something else going on like one of the lines being plugged with debris or the control valve being plugged with debris? For a while the high-pressure and Return line were attached to the control valve but resting on the garage floor while I was doing some of the restoration so I’m wondering if something got in there? If so any recommendations on cleaning it out?

Or do I need to look completely somewhere else like possibly another component And the steering system being defective being defective? Oh I forgot to mention the power steering cylinder is a few years old and the control valve was replaced just a a few years ago as well..

This one really has me baffled. If any of you guys have any recommendations I’d really appreciate it thanks.

I apologize for any typos as I’ve done this whole thing speech to text on my iPhone.

I'm having the same issue with my 1970 power steering. It's all new parts from Chockostang. Dan suggested replacing 1 pint of the Valvoline Type-F with 1 Pint Lucas Transmission Fluid Conditioner. This helped a little, then the power stopped working altogether.

I sent the pump to Dan and he said the pump had a bad valve. Dan replaced the valve and sent it back; free of charge. (Thanks, Dan!)

The power steering works a lot better now, but there are still times when it's like I have no power steering. I'm not sure if the fluid is getting too hot, or what. I'm pretty much used to it now.

I recall reading a post here where someone replaced the Type-F with Mobil 1 synthetic power steering fluid and had very good results. I'm wondering if that would help. It seems today's Type-F isn't like the Type-F of yesteryear.

It sometimes gets confusing to diagnose these systems. We have seen internally collapsed hoses, locked reaction valves, rear pump valves problems, blown cylinder internal seals, improper fluid (Synthetic is WORST), Of course trash flushed when adding a new piece which gets in valves--New fluid releases all the trash that was in old system,
Other issues--To numerous to list.

To the original poster. Your best bet is to contact a experienced OLD Ford mechanic. For goodness sake--STAY AWAY from the corner tire store!!! Those cats are excellent with computers, but can't find their *** with both hands on these old Mustangs.
