since the rotisserie restoration I’ve had issues with my power steering. It’s a new steering box all the tie rods, idler arm replaced and the front end aligned. It does have the Shelby drop. The vehicle acts like I do not have any power steering and the wheel does not like to center itself coming out of a turn automatically.
So I thought maybe it’s the new power steering pump it’s been in there for a few years. But the car has barely been driven in that time period.
Following the instructions that came with the pump from national parts depot, I first flushed the pump with new type F transmission fluid per the instructions the pump came with. I then installed the power steering pump hooked up the high-pressure line capped off the return on the pump the reservoir, filled the pump with type f tranny fluid up past the casting partially up the filler tube, then pulled off a coil wire and cranked the motor over while I had an assistant looking underneath at the return line that was uncappedComing from the control valve.
There was no fluid coming out I should say it was just dripping out barely. This was the same problem I was having with the old pump that I replaced with this pump just three days ago. So I’m wondering do I need to cycle the wheels to get the fluid, the new fluid, through the system and then I should start seeing fluid come out of the return line?
Or is there something else going on like one of the lines being plugged with debris or the control valve being plugged with debris? For a while the high-pressure and Return line were attached to the control valve but resting on the garage floor while I was doing some of the restoration so I’m wondering if something got in there? If so any recommendations on cleaning it out?
Or do I need to look completely somewhere else like possibly another component And the steering system being defective being defective? Oh I forgot to mention the power steering cylinder is a few years old and the control valve was replaced just a a few years ago as well..
This one really has me baffled. If any of you guys have any recommendations I’d really appreciate it thanks.
I apologize for any typos as I’ve done this whole thing speech to text on my iPhone.
