Is there anyway to ID an early 289 block, without pulling the engine completely apart? Is there anyway I could tell if it was an original hipo casting?

We have an engine at our shop that was put together quite a while ago..Maybe 86 or 87. We did a set of Aluminum heads for a N.Y. customer and sold him some parts. He assembled the engine on his own. About 6 or 7 years ago, he was moving from N.Y. to L.A. and shipped us the complete engine, to dyno. He said at that time that he would see us in a couple of months, to watch us dyno it. Well, he has never shown up, has a very common last name, and left us no forwarding address. We have tried locating this person for quite some time, now.

Anyway, he said that he had a Cobra, and that was what the engine was for. Some of the parts are original Cobra items, but the valve covers are reproduction closed letter items. The pan is an original Cobra piece. So, I was wondering if there was any way to tell if the block is an original Cobra piece without tearing the entire engine apart. It is really a beautiful piece and is complete including the clutch and bellhousing.

Thanks in advance......Gary /forums/images/icons/cool.gif

I understand that "K" blocks had a VIN # by the alt. Maybe check to see if it has one.

*LOL* my last name is very unique. I've only found 2 listings on the whitepage .com, and both of them were related, mom and son. They too, never knew anyone else with our last name. After talking to her and piecing family history, found out that there's an excellent chance we're related. Same basic history of our last name.

Since Cobra engines were bought from Ford, probably no VIN# would be stamped.
