I have a 1968 Conv with a 289. The stamp behind the intake is 8P*193012
the date stamp by the coil is 8F28. July 28 1968
the 2100 autolite carb is stamped E 8A18 Jan 18 1968

i can’t figure out what the stamp behind the intake represents?

The stamp behind the intake is a partial VIN required by federal law starting in the '68 model year. The transmission would be stamped as well. The stamp represents year/assembly plant /sequence number. To be honest, I have not seen one with the star stamp in that position. Your block would have been installed in the 93,102rd Ford vehicle to be assigned a VIN at the Twin Cities plant in the 1968 model year. I would also check the casting number ad date that's above the starter to verify it's a 68 block, and not a later casting. I think that plant built trucks at the time, but not 100% certain.

Starter must be removed. Remove two bolts and move starter out of the way. Fairly simple.

Sounds like your block started life in a '68 truck.

The "P" in the partial VIN indicates Twin Cities assembly plant

Casting number and date are above the starter, you can view from below between the starter and oil pan. Here's pics of my 302.
