66 mustang - grounding problem?

The engine starts and runs well (289 8 cil). The engine shuts off when I put any kind of electrical load on the car. ie... pressing the break or turning on the lights.

Thanks much for the response. It put me on the right track. Once I started checking for new wiring, I tracked some poor wiring to the ignition switch. It's a nice spider's nest of tape and semi exposed wires. I jiggled a few wires to catch some sparks. I'm going to replace the ignition switch and rewire it properly. Thanks again for sending me on the right track.
