HAVE A 67 K CODE GTA FASTBACK. THE DOOR TAG SAYS IT SHOULD
HAVE A C-4 AUTO TRANS. BUT THE HISTORY 999 I RECIEVED FROM
FORD STATES : AUTOMATIC XP-TYPE TRANMISSION.
WHAT THE HECK IS THAT?
THANKS,
MITCH

Not sure about the "XP" on the 999, but you are aware that the "A" in GTA indicates an automatic transmission equipped car...right? /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Automatic type XP is a C-4 auto. I got my History 999 and it said that too, and I knew I had the original tranny in the car from the S/n on the tag. I have a C-4.

XP = Extra Performance???

The C4's fitted behind the Hipo were different than the "standard" C4, hence a different designation. (?)

Yes, you COULD get an auto behind a Hipo in 66 & 67 - explains the GTA designation.

My Ford 999 report for the 68 1/2 CJ lists trans as XPL, and it is a C6 with car serial # stamped in the housing. Extra Performance, as mentioned in previous post, is probably what it means.

THANKS. I KNEW IT WAS AN AUTO BUT THE "XP" WAS CONFUSING.
IF THAT HAS SHOWED UP ON OTHER HISTORIES I'LL BUY IT.
SO HEAVIER CLUCHES, PLANETARY GEAR, AND HEAVIER VALVE
BODY SPRINGS.
THANKS,
MITCH

I do not know what XP stands for but I doubt very much it stands for anything similar to extra performance.

XP appears to be the internal code Ford referred to the small block C4.

XPL seems to be the code Ford used for the big block C6's

I do not have official knowledge but this is what I have observed.

Thanks again. I did recieve a email from fomoco.com that also said that "XP" was just a short hand notation at Ford to designate automatic transmissions and I thought it was
something special.
