Hi,

My Mach 1 is completely restored with all new or refurbished parts.

In less that 200 miles of driving I have burnt out 2 new starters and 4 new starter solenoids.

Each time the problem starts when I am cranking the car.

I turn the ignition switch and the engine starts but the starter keeps running. I am unable to stop the engine by turning the ignition off. Even after disconnecting the battery the starter turns until it burns out.

I have been fortunate that the issue has not resulted in a fire.

I also had a situation where I drove the car and when I pulled it in my garage, it would not turn off. I disconnected the battery to stop the engine.

The ignition cylinder, ignition switch, and all the wiring is brand new. I have triple checked the wires on the solenoid.

I now have a new Motorcraft solenoid installed. I purchased an NOS ignition lock cylinder.

I am now working to purchase an NOS Motorcraft ignition switch D1AZ-11572-C (SW-1054).

Can the problem be something other than the ignition cylinder and ignition switch?

I would greatly appreciate feedback from the forum experts.

Thanks. Norman.

The starter and alternator are both CarQuest Premium brands.

Carquest Premium Starter 3124S
Carquest Premium Alternator Remanufactured Premium 7058A

I ran both CarQuest Premium starter and alternator since 1992 before replacing under the lifetime warranty from Advance Auto during the restoration.

I checked and as you suspected there is no ground strap from engine to firewall or frame.

Sounds like this explains the ruined solenoids, starters, and instrument cluster voltage regulator.

I will get this addressed and post back once I get the ground wire in and install the new starter.

Would you recommend that install an NOS Motorcraft ignition switch just to be on the safe side?

I have replaced other aftermarket parts that the shop installed like the temperature sensor. The gauge reading was erratic until I installed a Motorcraft sensor. Now the gauge is always accurate.

Thank you!!!
