On the 70, you have the set of bows which fit into the pockets sewn into the headliner. Both the front and rear bow have two springs each which slip over the bow and attach to the roof. These are to keep the bow from rotating within the sleeve and to stay in their upright position.

The 70 utilizes a long strip of sharp, tiny, pointed teeth on the C pillar area to retain the headliner as it stretches down the c pillar, to terminate under the hockey stick molding.

I don't know the 72 set up so cannot tell you whether this compares with what you are familiar with.

The retaining strips are only on the back sail panel area. The sides and front are glued in. Make sure you have the bows properly placed. They are color coded. On a 70 sportsroof the bow placement from FRONT to BACK is:

Plain
Green
Pink
Grey

If you get them out of order you will not have proper fitment.

To install, you insert the bows in the headliner. Install the headliner/bow assembly in the car by placing the end of the bows in the holes along the roof rail. (There are two holes at each position, a lower and upper hole. Generally you put the bow in the upper hole on the drivers side and the lower hole on the passengers side per the factory manual.) Next attach the rear retainer wires to the back bow and the roof support. Then stretch the headliner foward and glue to the front window channel. Then stretch the sail panel over the retainers. Stretch the sides and glue. Last, stretch and glue to the rear glass channel.

VERY IMPORTANT TIP: Install all screws for the trim, visors, coat hook, etc. prior to installing the headliner. Once the headliner is installed you can feel where the screws are and make a small cut to remove the screws. This will allow you to find all the screw and mounting locations once the headliner is in. If you do not do this you will have a terrible time finding the holes.

Take you time and you will get professional results.
