I found a few sites that said the thing about the oval means 28 and two dots mean 31, no site said anything about this not beeing true on the versailles.

I think you're going by the old " 2 dots on the end of axle" method to think that the versailles is 31 spline but that assumption is incorrect. it will have 28 spline axles.

 

i hav seen a lot of versali rear ends and have never come across a 31 spline, i do not belive they made them!

 

I have a good rear out of a '70 thats a 28 spline with a posi/trac-loc. I would like to put the posi/trac-loc into a 31 spline versaille rear that has an open 2.50 chunk, that rear has great looking disk brakes on it. Its for a none Mustang project that needs rear disk brakes.

Are you sure the Versailles has 31 spline axles? If so they are not stock.

But to help answer the question of swapping a 28 to a 31, it can't be done unless you have the 28 spline trac loc case machined for the 31 spline axles and what I mean is the axle opening on the 28 is to small for 31 spline axles to slide in. NOW you can swap the trac loc pieces from one case to the other meaning the three pieces in a trac loc that make it a trac loc can be swapped between either a 28 or 31 spline case. you can change a 31 spline case to a 28 spline unit because the axle opening is not an issue.

So if you really have a 28 spline trac loc you either need to machine the openings or trade it for a 31 spline case and you still need to swap out the 28 spline pieces for 31 spline pieces. I have several sets of the 31 spline pieces I can sell or trade you. I may even be able to swap you the correct case. If you have an equa loc then I can't help you and of course the Versailles should be 28 spline unless it has custom axles.

I don't get the question. Is the 28 spline a 9"? Are you trying to just swap the ring and pinion from the 31 spline to the traction-lok center section? If so, that's a yes. If they are both 9", then you can swap them, with no problem, but you've got to have the matching spline axles.

What year is this? If you're looking for 28 spline '67-'70 axles, I have a set and need 31 spline ones.

 

The 28 spline carrier won't work with 31 spline axles.
