OK so i got my 4 barrel on the car and it has made a world of difference now i was looking at heads to put on the car.was wondering what could go on it that would perform better but i wouldnt have to change rod length or pistons.have a holley 600 and edelbrock performer intake.friend that helped me put on intake told me it sounds like i have a mild cam but wasn't sure and i was told that this could make a big difference.not really after hp as much as i am tourqe.anyone have any better ideas on what i should change rather than heads?

Any crap sticking to your wall after all this flung at it? :)
Ill help spend your wise money also.
Know that A code made more power over your C by way of pistons that raised comp ratio.
Cobra HO GT40P iron heads, supposedly the best flowing stock heads Ford has come up with. Found Cheap $2-300 or less if theyre not wise from JYard Explorers 97-01 with 5.0. Check how much you should mill to bring chambers from 57 to under stock 54cc or less. Not much porting needed just some bumps removed. Lots of info on these. No need for whacko springs and such with the right cam on a street car. Wanna spend more $$ GT40X or Y? Same things in aluminum.
Look at Comp cams 31-230-3 or 31-234-3 SB Ford 289 - 302ci Xtreme Hydraulic Camshaft # 31-230-3 | Northern Auto Parts
Using an online hp/torque computer these grinds are awsome for off the shelf stuff for our needs. Other brands with similar specs are plentyful.
Some headers and with less than 1k youre shredding tires with the best all in a weekend.
225ftlb to 370ftlb+ 1200-4000rpm with a nice curve
330hp @ 5000
Try this combo and report back. I would but my 5 speed fell through and I need that 1st.
HP is for show Torque is what makes you go!

I can't tell you what your estimated hp and tq will be at fwy speeds [rpm] without a lot more info.

Someone else will need to address this for you if you feel you absolutely must know. It appears to me that you are way over thinking this. You can not have a smooth idling 289 that gets 50 mph and has 600 hp. You can't have your cake and eat it too.

A comp xe274 cam will have more peak rpm than an xe256. It will also have more hp/tq at it's peak rpm than the xe256 will at it's peak rpm. It will also have less hp/tq at 2000 rpm than the xe256.

What is the 1 single thing you absolutely positively must have?

The link below shows the 31-234 [XE256H] cam specs 1ofAMillion suggested which is similar to one of the cams I recommended to you previously.

51-221-4 - Xtreme Energy? Hydraulic Flat Tappet Camshafts

Generally if HP goes up torque will drag along. HP usually comes with a more abrupt peak while torque can build and rise in a nicer curve.
Im drooling over this CL add right now! 450 for in the box and install stuff.
Ford GT40P Heads, (new in box)

For free upgrade find a 97-2001? 5.0 Explorer. Take the rear end, lots of threads on that, and heads, the engine as a spare, use the heads and part out the body, trans, intake etc.. All easier said than done but I bet someone would at least break even.

gYour 5 speed will take care of the fwy, 323 gears will help substantially with launch and still not rev to death on the fwy.

So were back to where we started in my earlier. Gears or increasing your cubic inches will launch you more than ANY of these cams will. Since you can't change your eng size that leaves gear ratio.

Put a 256-262 duration cam in it, if it doesn't launch enough change your gears or change your gears to 323 and if it doesn't launch enough then put in the cam.
