1970 Twister Special

The Kansas City District's Twister Special was an outcropping of the bankrupt American Raceways Inc Pace cars. These specially ordered Mustangs became the starting point for the 96 kicked off High-Performance Orientation Day at Kansas City International Raceway on November 7, 1969. All Twisters were painted Grabber Orange, had special graphics on the side panel and the shaker scoop option. All cars were supposed to have 428 SCJ but there were not enough engines available to do 96 such cars with consecutive VINs so about half of the Twisters used new 351 Cleveland engine. One identifying feature of these Mustangs is the extra big block shock tower reinforcements.

Yes, I've seen one that frequents the shows back home in Indiana. IIRC, they were a special production model like the highland specials sold in the Denver DSO. I believe the Twisters had a KC DSO.. but I may be wrong about that. So, the few that survive should be close to you! What's his asking price?

Here is a picture of one for those that haven't seen one.. They are my favortie special order Mustang! http://www.chandlerwheels.com/images/1970_mustang_twister_2.jpg

Needing total restoration, quarters, floors, bucket seats missing, floor pans, shaker missing. 351C motor there and auto trans, not original wheels. I didn't go to look at the car from the description yet so I dont know about torque boxes. As it sets he wants $8500.00 for it. To me, unless its a really special car I'm not gonna bother...

As far as rare, 96 units is pretty low. I have an old Mustang Monthly issue, July 1989 that shows only 39 351 automatic Twisters being built. This might be a car that you can sink some money into and still be ahead because of its finished worth. My uncle worked at Gene Taylor Ford in Sarcoxie, MO and told me a story many times about the Twister that they received. It was a 428 auto car. He always talks about how fast it was and that a local guy bought and blew the motor in no time. They replaced it once and it happened again. This time the guys dad came in and told them he didn't want such a strong motor put back in it. They put a 390 block and the heads, etc. from the CJ back in it. My uncle said that you couldn't tell much differece yet. The kid also took the Twister stickers off because he didn't like the way they looked. He wasn't sure what ever happened to the car, probably not a happy ending on this one. I'd say its worth checking out.

Ray,
You might go look at it with the max you are willing to pay in cash in your pocket. Show him that you know mustangs and see if he will deal. Sounds like this car is more rare than a Shelby although not as sought after. Fix the car then take it to a Chief's game with a big sign...."Buy this 32 year old Chiefs fan." You know how crazy those folks get.

I live 1.5 hours south of KC

Oh yea I've seen one and allmost bought in 1990. Terry fritts is the guy to get a hold of to verify. The cars all had consecutive serial numbers I believe in the 118xxx area. A small block car brings mid thirties. My car is a sister car called sidewinder and there is only 6 known in existance. Last I knew there was 46 twisters found. If your serious get a hold of me and I'll give you Terry's number.

I'm gonna take a good look at it. I want to build a go fast car and use the vert to cruise town in. Given the fact that this area creates a lot of rust due to salt and the fact that key parts are missing it may be beyond a economical restoration, especially at his asking price.. I am gonna try to find out what the serial numbers of these cars are before going to look...
