Gypsy-R - You were right! Thanks

I purchased an AOD trans for my 67 Mustang. When I shift the trans by hand (outside the car) I can shift the trans into P-R-N-OD-D but it will not shift into the 1-2 position. The guy I bought the trans from said this is normal because the trans needs to be installed and under pressure to shift into 1-2. Is this accurate?

When I pulled the pan, I can see that the (forgive me but I don't know the correct names of things) indent gear lever "A"in picture is hitting against a thing that looks like a mushroom shaped plunger "B". This stops the trans from shifting into 1-2. Please tell me this is normal?

I reasearched this issue and found that Johnpro had the same problem at one point buit I could not find how it was resolved. Help!

I have a 90 model AOD that I plan to put in my 70. I must check it.

Pretty sure you don't shift into OD, it's the same as D, the transmission does the OD upshift internally without you moving the handle. I have read about having to do the 1-2 shuffle which is quickly shifting from 1st to D then back down to first to actually get to 2nd in the stock transmission configuration.

I put a custom valve body in so I don't have to shuffle and can shift 1-2-3(D) and let it automatically upshift into OD at hwy. speeds or I can flip a switch and it won't go into OD for track use.

What I see in the picture is that the manual lever pin is not even near the manual control valve. I don't see how it shifts into any gear. The pin with the B on it is supposed to be in the slot just to the left of where you have the A.
A couple of times I have have pulled a valve body (under the car) and totally missed making this engagement putting it back in. I know others have done it too.
ON an AOD I believe you have to loosen up all the valve body bolts like you are going to remove the valve body, but just pull the valve body away enough the get the shifter pin back in. Don't try to cheat and force the pin back to where it goes , you WILL screw something up.
Edit-I found a thread with some nice big pictures that show how the linkage is supposed to be. Here- Aero JMod DIY - Crownvic.net
You may notice they are not of an AOD but an AODE/4R70W. Other stuff is different but the manual control lever stuff is almost Identical.

Gypsy-R, Thanks for the great post! I have to assume that I didn't put everything back together correctly when I moved the shift lever from the "down" to the "up" position. Unfortunantly, the trans is now in the car and I'll have to fix my mistake on my back and deal with 12 quarts of tranny falling on my face (yuck).

Can you also verify JonK's earlier post that the D and OD occupy the same indent? When I shift the trans, I only have a total of "5" indents/positions (P-R-N-OD/D-2/1). This was the case before I changed the shifter location so I know it is not being caused by my changes. Thanks

There were slightly different ones over the years, but off the top of my head SWMBO's Fox Mustang has P-R-N-OD-D-1. No second gear position, hence the "shuffle" of going 1-D-1 to manually shift from 1 to 2. Then back to D again to get third. None of which I bother with, it's an automatic. I put it in OD and go. If Iwere into drag racing I'd go with a different valve body so I wouldn't have mess about with shifter shuffling.

Thanks again Gypsy-R! Can anyone else running an AOD chime in and let me know if you have three indents of drive gears e.g., OD-D-1. I seem to only have two forward gear indents when I move the the shifter. It's not the linkage because it happens when I do it by hand too. Thanks

Well until your get the shifter pin back into the "plunger" the way it's supposed to be...
I'm surprised you can feel any gear positions with the sifter arm jammed like it is. Fix that THEN see how many gear indents you have.

I'm going to try to fix it this weekend. The reason I asked what's normal is when I purchased the trans it only made 5 clicks total P-R-N-OD-D. I am trying to determine if the place I purchased the trans from is responsible for this problem.

It's Fixed!

Gypsy-R - You hit the nail on the head when you identified my problem. I inserted the nipple into the slot and buttoned it all back up and now all the shift indents work. I cannot thank you enough for your help and those fantastic pictures you shared.

No problem, glad that's all it was.
