Here is a photo of my old data plate.

Was it originally a black background or a grey background? It kinda look grey, but is fairly well weathered.

The original color was Med Metallic Ivy Gold. Could that be found in both versions of paint, or only one? I am not sure what the difference is between the grey and black tags. Something to do with the type of paint. Would other Mustangs of similar consecutive number/build date be painted with the same type/color of paint, and therefore have the same type of data plate?

How rare is one color tag versus the other? Are they both fairly common?

John,

Your car and my car have the same color combinatins and are about 2 months (29K, OCtober 1964 for my build date) apart and my dataplate has a black background. Do you have any more pics of your car? I am always curious to see more honey gold cars as it is a rare color from what I heard.

I kinda fudged the photos a little by washing the car first, then photographing it while it is wet. It looks nowhere as good as it does in the photos. The paint was applied when I was in high school in 1985/86 era.

The car is a C-code, automatic with the only options being the visibility group (remote driver's mirror, weird day/night rocker mirror, deluxe seat belts with retractors, tinted windshield, 2-speed wipers), factory air, and rocker panels. I could not find any SunX marks on the glass, it should have all SunX glass with factory A/C. The A/C unit is dated December 1964.

I have owned the car since 1984, first car in high school. It has rust in all the usual places. The cowl is gone, and the front of the doors have rust holes. The quarters are near perfect though.

Notice my 1991 GT i the background. My daily driver, now almost 20 years old. Might be time for a new one....

I have heard from old-timers that the ivy gold/honey gold/champagne gold color was actually very popular back in the day. One of the most common colors. It seems that every car manufacturer had the color available. I believe it dropped out of favor and most cars were repainted red, white, orange, purple, or whatever. It does seem to be rare these days, except for the new Mustangs with this color. I was thinking it would be neat to get one and park it next to my old one with the same color.

The Door Data Plate in 64-65 could be Black or Grey depending on the Type of Paint that the Car was originally finished in. A Black Plate indicates M30J Non-Acrylic Enamel and a Grey Plate indicates M32J Acrylic Enamel. From 66-69 a Black Plate indicated M32J Acrylic and a Grey Plate indicated M30J Non-Acrylic.

John,

Mine is an A code, automatic, with factory AC, rocker panels, and power steering. I know the windshield was replacedd by either the first or second owner (prior to 1992) as the carlite logo is block lettering as opposed to script but has the tint band. I also have the day/nite mirror but itis the twist style. Looks original but not sure if the first or second owner might of changed it. I only have one speed wipers and the motor is dated October 1964.

I had a Honey Gold coupe with black interior built in July of '65 at Dearborn that also had a gray tag.
