Bought a Tuff Dawg crate engine

Well, after doing some research and trying to stay within my budget, I decided to order a Tuff Dawg crate motor. I opted for the 302/328 hp version. A Thumpr cam and gear drive were the only things I requested differently. I did request a Performer Air Gap intake but after discussion with the rep for Tuff Dawg and doing some research, I decided an extra 3-4 hp wasn't worth the extra $100. I won't have the engine for another 6 weeks so I will keep you guys posted when I receive it. I will say this so far, they're customer service is outstanding. I talked with one of their guys for over 25 minutes and was very impressed with how he treated me. I just hope their motor is half as good as their customer service. lol! I know a guy who lived in Phoenix AZ and he says D&J Machine (Tuff Dawg) is a very reputable shop. Purchase price is going to be $2695 shipped (+another $50-$100 depending on what gear drive I get). Can't wait for it to arrive. :)

You ought to see the pictures of the destruction when his gear drive failed. Unless you're trying to impress the Chevy guys, gear drive is a waste on the street. I run a 550-600hp 393w with a double roller chain and I have no issues.

Yeah, I would not waste my money on a gear drive for a street car with this little hp. They are noisy to boot. If its got an Edelbrock RPM intake you don't have to spend the extra money on the Air Gap if you don't want to. The Air Gap is better technology but won't make much difference on your engines hp and rpm level.

The only thing I worry about when I see crate engines priced this low is what is the workmanship and the extent of the machining and what is the quality of the parts going into the engine. Sounds like you have done some homework on the company so I hope everything turns out well. Let us know how it runs once you get it in the car!

Thanks for the replies. I was actually thinking of dumping the gear drive but I'm not sure about the Performer Air Gap. Will the air gap fit under my stock hood? The gear drive I just wanted for the noise anyway, but I really think I would get sick of hearing it after awhile. If I'm not going to have any fitment problems with the hood, then I'll probably go with the air gap. The only reason they talked me out of the air gap was because they don't think it will fit under the stock hood. Anybody running air gaps on 67-68 Mustangs??

I noticed you said that you request a Thumpr cam. You may have, but make sure you listen to one of these in person and not just internet clips. I bought one because I loved the sound on youtube but was never really happy with it once I installed it. The clips do not capture how noisy the valve train is. My car sounded like a diesel under the hood there was so much valve clacking. The cam also requires a lot of initial timing (18*) and makes carb tuning a real pain in the rear with the long duration.

First off - very nice price for a crate motor. I just picked mine up on Friday after installation (it's a little more pricy but lovin it).

There's much proof out there that the Air Gap beats Victor Jr., and all others for mid-range & upper hp/tq numbers (motor runs cooler) - and it will give you much more than 4hp. Spend the extra money.

Here's a cool dyno test result:

Thanks for the youtube vid. My mind is definitely made up.

Ummm...where? I think you need to back this statement up with proof. An Air Gap is going to make better low-mid range torque on a dyno but that doesn't mean the car is going to be faster. I want to see this "proof".

I spent more tracking down an old roller and rebuilding it than that, and after some of the headaches I've been through, I'll go crate next time! Keep us posted. I looked at those guys when I bought a 351 for another car, but ended up going another route.
