Been trying to trouble shoot the fuel gauge in my 68 which stopped working today. It's the only one still hooked up. Anyways, I checked the voltage regulator with a fluke & the side that says IGN is 12v, but the other side is 0v. since I read that the voltage will flucuate from 12-0 avg being 5 or 6, how can I tell if it's bad. Not sure if the fluke just isn't catching the quick change in voltage every second.

The regulator is a simple bimetal switch. It needs a load to operate. Without the other three gauges there's not enough resistance to heat the bimetal and operate the switch. You maybe able to replace the load which a resistor. Maybe an electrical engineer could tell you the size of the resistor needed, or the regulator has an adjustment. But, I don't know if it can be adjusted that far.

The Ford test for the CV Regulator is to place a meter or test light between the plug and the sending unit connection and turn the ignition key on. The meter or light will show 12V or light will come on constant for about 5 seconds and then flicker on and off at a constant rate. If it does this the CV regulator is good. I thought I had a problem with my temp sending switch and did this test to verify CV regulator was not the problem.

Thanks for the link for the solid state regulator from radio shack. I thought about that & thats the route I'm going to try first. The CVR has got to be bad, since the fuel gauge used to work up to 2 days ago. The temp & oil have been disconnected for almost a year now.
