engine fizels out after 1/2 mile

Hey, a clogged fuel filter, where it screws into the carb can also do that. The metal filter won't hold much dirt. The dirt can clog, settle, clog, settle again. Happened to me a few times over the years but fortunately the filter is cheap and easy to install.
Argh! After rereading your post about a new carb you must already have a new fuel filter.
