I have owned a 1968 (not numbers matching) fastback for about a year now,but recently has thoughts of selling it.Upon putting it up for sale and having people come by and look at it.I was informed that the front clip is from a 65-66 mustang :chainsaw:.The 68 fenders, hood, bumper and all that line up,but I guess the export brace, master cylinder and shock tower caps are wrong.I guess my question is what can I do to make the car right for sale or am I just stuck with it forever? Most of the body panels have already been replaced and only need a quarter panel and wheel well to have the exterior of the car complete. If I finish the car will it ever be worth any money?I appreciate any info you guys could give me.

I am saying the sheet metal looks like a 1968,but structurally it is a 65-66.That atleast is what I have been told.I haven't done any work to the car since I got it and am now thinking of either finishing the car or just selling it.Here is a link to all the pictures that I have, and I would appreciate anyones input on what to do.

Well it does appear from the pics that they are telling you correctly that the inner structure appears to be from an early model. I had a 68 GT with a left front apron and core support from a 66 6cyl coupe put in at some time. I took it out and put a NOS core support and apron back in it. But your problem is much more invovled to fix. From your pictures it even looks like the entire firewall was replaced with an early model with the use of a single resevoir mastercylinder and early steering column. But yet it appears to have a 68 cowl! I'm not sure where the 65 starts and the 68 ends but apparently the car was invovled in a major collision at some point in time and they used whatever was available.

As far as selling, I would still think that someone will want the car. It just might be at a somewhat reduced price from what you were hoping to get. Can you tell us what you are asking for the car in its "As-is" condition so that we can gauge where you are in the car? Someone who may do a restomod may not care which inner structure it has. The only problem is that most people will not want to sink a ton of $$ into restoring or modifying a car like that only to have a half breed when completed. It can be straightened back out, but it is a major undertaking usually only worthy of a upper end car (GT, S-code, Shelby, etc) But if it is cheap enough somebody
WILL buy it.

From what Darko Stoj has told me form his observation of the car in person you need to look very closely at the understructure where the aprons meet the firewall and the framerails meet the floor. You might have more issues than you think as the front clip might have been installed very unsafely. You really need to take some more up close pictures of the engine compartment and the underneath area so we can get a better idea of just how bad off you are.

The overall best solution to your problem might be an entire front clip from a 67/68 including the firewall and framerails. It is a lot of work but very doable and not as hard as you think. That is the only way you are going to get it back to being a 68. Measure the width of your rearend also because from your pictures it has the necked down outer tubes and by 68 I thought those were supposed to be straight so you might also have a 65/66 rear axle in there.

It looks like you have rust in the upper quarters around the trunk jamb area but the pictures are not too clear so that may be something else. If it is rust you need to figure out just how far it has gone and how much metal needs to be replaced to get it right again. You really ought to have someone who is very experienced with Mustangs look the car over and give you some advice on whether it is better to fix everything or cut your losses and sell it like it is to someone who can and will fix it.

From you pictures it is hard to tell all that is wrong but i have resurrected Mustangs that most would have thrown away so anything is possible.

Good luck

I have been looking around on Ebay and there are a ton a rusted out 67-68 fastbacks for sale. They are pulling 3-6k for a shell, and I am wondering what do you guys think a fair price for my car is?If I don't sell it I am going to change the cosmetic things that make it look like a 65-66,but am not going to change he whole front clip.I had someone come over and take a look at the welds and he said that the frame is solid and the welds look good where the cars were sectioned together.I have someone to do my mechanical stuff, but noone to do body work.I would rather not spend thousands on having to take the car someone and have body panels replaced and preped for paint.Anyone on here is the metro Detroit area the welds body panels in and is looking to make some extra cash email me.

I just thought of something else about the cars on Ebay. They are being sold with a bill of sale, and not a title.I atleast have a title, and the dash vin# matches the title on record.I know this isn't the for sale forum, but I am just trying to get some info on what you think a fair market value is for my car.

Thanks
Eric

I know you're not going to want to hear this, but...

you have a car in a very unusual state. As such it is almost impossible for any of us to judge its value. To me it might as well not even have a front clip on it, but the next guy might buy the car and drive it like it is. The only way you are going to find out "what it is worth" is to put it on ebay starting at $100 with no reserve. Ebay is the best determinant of the true market value of something and when the bidding stops you will know what it is worth.
