Looking at an older mustang in Georgia .
Owner says after he bought the car a year ago and put it on the road , The DMV kept the title , so he only has a green slip ( I believe he called it ?) after it was legaly on the road .
He is thinking abought selling the car but has no title .
Anyone familar with the Georgia vehicle ownership transfer laws on 70 or later vehicles ?

My understanding is that GA does not issue titles for older cars. What you have to do is get copies of owners paid tax recepts and show the car was registered in GA. Buy it, get notarized bill of sale from owner. When you get home with the car, pay your taxes, sales and property tax, and then insurance and register it (get plates) and then your state will issue tags and title in your name. If planning on restoring and taking off the road, you have to do all of this, and then cancel insurance and turn in plates.
At least it's that way in SC if buying an old car from GA owner.

Sorry folks! Can't help commenting! I've heard there are states that don't use titles on old cars. In this case 70 or older.

Let's see. If I move to Georgia for example and I own a $1,800,000 Bugatti, go to the Geargia DMV to register my Bugatti in Georgia... they keep my Title !!!!

So if you live in one of these states, your house like mine was built before 1970 is the title no longer any good?

Well I'm in Georgia and I've never heard of some of this mentioned above.Anytime I've had a classic that had a title I could turn it in with $18 and a new title would be issued in my name.A bill of sale is all that's needed to get a tag for the vehicle if it's earlier model than 73 I think it is.So if you own a $1,800,000 car and want to have a Ga. title you have to turn in the one you have.I think the idea here is that you can't hold 2 titles to the same vehicle.

you can get a title in GA if you have a valid one to turn into the DMV like said above...but if you dont and the chain of ownership has been broken then GA doesnt issue a title. any vehicle older than 1986 works this way....

Same as last post! was in GA for 7+ years, always had titles on my mustangs! what is weird is that supposely the DMV kept the title ... usually you give them the title you got from the seller and they mail you the new one within 5-7 days .... I usually stay away of cars without titles ...

I live in Ga and have a title. I turned in the old title and $18. That's all there was to it. It was voluntary as to if I wanted a title or not. I opted for a title.

I've never had an issue getting a title for either of mine here in Georgia.

Several of the cars I've bought have been from another state. I get the title with the car. Then I go to the DMV with the title and the car. I register it in Wisconsin, get plates and the Wisconsin title with the date of registration. The title says previously titled in XXXXX (the previous title). Never bought or sold a car without a title so can't say what would happen here!

They keep the previous title...never found that to be strange. I xerox the original title just so I have a paper trail on the car.

The single most important step to take FIRST is check with YOUR DMV about what they require. It doesn't matter WHAT the state you're buying the car from requires. Be specific with them about what state you're buiyng it from. The get the information they give you IN WRITING! Although some states do not require a title for older vehicles, yours may. I tell you this from personal (and recent), experience!

Good advice, the only state that matters is your current state of residence. Check out their website or go visit your local office. Many states that require titles will accept a bill of sale and a current registration document from a non-title state.

My home state, CT, is also a non-title state. All you need is a bill of sale to register any vehicle 25 years or older. CT DMV will not issue a title for any vehicle 25 or older, even if you request it, they just won't do it, tried that already.
