I'm new to the forum, just found it. Love sifting through all the threads and pictures. You guys have some truly beautiful cars! I've been in love with classic mustangs since I was a kid.

I have a '65 coupe with a 289 that needs some lovin' again. Inherited it from my wife's family and my FIL says it's "numbers matching". Haven't confirmed that though. 78K original miles. Was in great shape like 10 years ago but was mistakenly stored in a bag and moisture got in. Now most of the chrome and interior metal is pitted/rusted and the undercarriage is rusted as all hell. The engine runs great, but she needs a new exhaust and new tires.

My first step is to get some new wheels and bring her to her new home. Planning on chrome Torque Thrusts from MustangsUnlimited: https://www.mustangsunlimited.com/itemdy00.asp?T1=WTP34D+01 (I'm in CT) to make it look more sporty.

Anyway, could use some advice on a course of action to take. Everything would have to be done in steps since I can't afford the time or $$ to do a full restoration in one shot. How would you proceed if you were in my shoes?

Here she is: (small pics)

Welcome and congrats on getting a pony. Since it's running already, I say fix what you have to to be able to enjoy it, the rust can wait. Fluid and filter changes and brakes gone over would be a start. If it has the single bowl master cylinder, definitely upgrading it to a dual bowl asap for safety. It's easy to get caught up in trying to make it 100% but resist it until you are ready. Frequent this forum as you go, once you have it running and driving safely then you could look up cleaning up surface rust underneath. One thing is for sure there are many helpful guys and gals on this forum that will be glad to help you out.

Nice - great start. Clean up as much as you can and drive it! Gather parts as you can (CL and EBay are good resources) and replace the pitted pieces as time allows. Might be good to fully inspect the rust under the car and post photos here. Much could be surface rust which is easy to fix....

Welcome to VMF- and to the addiction of classic Mustangs!

For some of the pitted chrome pieces, you might try scrubbing them with some aluminum foil and some Diet Coke (or you can use a little WD-40 or even some vinegar). You'd be surprised how much of the tiny rust particles you can get out of the chrome!

Welcome to the VMF.

Post some pics of the rust spots when you can so we can give the best advice.
As for the direction to go in I agree with the rest since it's already drivable I'd focus on the steering, braking, & suspension first.

Braking kinda speaks for itself & if the suspension & steering are worn out then the car could end up wondering the road, being really uncomfortable & unsafe to drive.

Thanks for all the advice. I'd say the only things that "need" to be done to get back on the road safely is tires. The exhaust will have to be next since it has some cracks and is just worn out. Other than that it runs great. Looks like most of the rust underneath is surface rust so I guess I'd just have to clean them individually as time allows? I'll post more pics once I get back on the road!

finally ordered the wheels and put them on. what a difference they make! snapped some pics of the wheel wells for you all.

gonna make some safety upgrades over the winter (3 pt belts, LEDs, front disc brakes?....are they necessary?) and get her back on the road more often. I need to check the master cylinder and see if that needs upgrading too....think it does.

looks like most of the undercarriage is just surface rust (from my untrained eye) which is good news. I'll be looking to install a new exhaust next year too.

Any recommendations for reputable shops in CT (Fairfield County or eastern NY mostly) would be very much appreciated!

I'm sure I'll be back with more questions. as always, any input is appreciated!
