Help! '66 Coupe Windshield Seal/Gasket Problem

I'm begging for some help here. I have an expert glass installer working on my car. I bought the Daniel Carpenter windshield and rear window seals. The rear window gasket/seal is soft and pliable and it went on without any fuss. However, the front windshield gasket/seal (C5ZZ-6503110) is hardly pliable at all. The fellow started to wrap it around the glass and he stopped. He doesn't recommend using this rubber because it's so inflexible. He's concerned about leaks, fitting over the headliner material properly, and attaching the stainless surround pieces to the clips.

Anybody else have this issue?

Unfortunately, SoffSeal doesn't make a gasket/seal for the '66 Mustang. Can anybody recommend a better, more pliable product from a different manufacturer?

OK, more info. I looked through my records and I bought a complete "weatherstrip kit," including the windshield seal, from Kentucky Mustang around this time last year. (Took this long to get her out of paint and ready to re-install glass.) Turns out that Kentucky Mustang offers two different windshield seals from Dennis Carpenter; one is an "import" and the other is "Made in USA." You guessed it, the kit that they sold me (more economical to buy a kit rather than piece-meal) included the "import" product (it's $7 cheaper than the "Made in USA" version). There were 11 pieces in the kit (including the rear window seal) and the windshield seal is the ONLY part identified as "import" (slipped by me unnoticed). I'm guessing that is why the rear window seal went together so easily and the windshield seal did not.

Long story short, I'm trying to get Kentucky Mustang to send me the DC "Made in USA" windshield seal. I'll let you know how I make out.

Thanks for the "heads up." For my '66 coupe, I did purchase the AMK F-3490 rear window clips

and the AMK F-580 front windshield clips

Now, if I can just get Kentucky Mustang to call me back this morning about the Daniel Carpenter "Made in USA" windshield seal...

I called Kentucky Mustang back because it's nearly noon and they didn't call me back. Unfortunately, they don't have the "Made in USA" DC windshield seal/gasket in stock and it would be several weeks before they could get one out to me. The rep would not call Daniel Carpenter to have it drop-shipped... and he said "Besides, there would be a cost involved." I don't care. I just want a decent windshield seal!

Frustrated (but politely), I called Daniel Carpenter back. They're sending me a "Made in USA" part as a customer courtesy!

I see that I kept mixing up "Dennis Carpenter" and "Daniel Carpenter..."

This thread caused me to open a box and double check what I ordered from CJ's back in May. They list two, one "concours" and one not. I sprang for the concours version (you can't call me a cheapskate ;)) and got the Carpenter USA made of EPDM rubber (whatever that means). I just looked at reviews of the cheaper version and saw criticisms so I guess I'm good to go. It will be installed soon now! Thanks for the heads up semperfido, others can take heed now.

To be fair to Kentucky Mustang, I just received an automated e-mail ship notification from them. Apparently, they just shipped a replacement windshield seal (the "Made in USA" version). This morning, they claimed that they didn't have one in stock... I'm not sure if this is a second replacement or just paperwork confirming the drop-shipment from Daniel Carpenter? I may receive two...

semperfido,
Thank you for posting this! I will keep this in mind when I (if ever?) buy windshield gaskets for my 68 coupe (its still a shell). And big shout out to Daniel Carpenter Mustang (it is confusing as I believe Dennis and Daniel Carpenter are father/son and share some business but each have their own companies).

Thanks
