Doug this has been a topic for many years.
Do a search here on VMF and you will find out a lot of information concerning the swap.
Suffice it to say it is easier and cheaper to buy a V8 in the first place than to do a swap. But some like the challenge.

 

thanks, yeah i'm finding out that buying my 6 cyl is turning out to be a pretty big job. like a real first timer i jumped at the chance to buy my car becauce she was virtually rust free and i didnt know the engine swap was going to be such a huge project. ::

 

Well, a rust free car might make up for the swap cost in the end. My car needs everything, floors, maybe fender aprons, everything behind the differantial needs replaced, PLUS the six to eight swap. The only reason i don't go get an original eight cyl. is because the car was my mom's. Otherwise, that peice would be OUT of my garage, to be replaced. Might do it anyway, but probly not.

 

My suggestion is make it a sweet 6. It is still a classic Mustang just not a V8. There are a few VMFers that have great looking and performing I6s.
And it will save you a ton of cash.

If this is your first, I'd advise leaving the 6 in there for awhile and work out the other bugs in the car. The engine is the easy part. You can also upgrade the proper parts as you go and when everything is swapped out then but in a V-8.

You can also build up a 6 pretty easy. go to www.fordsix.com for a lot of ideas. Here is what I've got:

Also a T-5 tranny, dual exhaust headers, electronic ignition, and some other miscellanous mods.

Don't give up on the 6 too easily, it is a great engine to start with and become familiar with the classic mustangs.

this is something that you might not want to get into....
In January I bought my 65'. it was a six originally, the PO had already put the 289 in and it runs great. BUT, the brakes and suspension were still six equipment. I figured no prob... then I got started. I got some parts in today ( 8 cyl.springs, needed new lower arms and upper balls)and disk kit and dual MC comes in two weeks. (Back ordered)Until then I found some hidden rust that cannot be ignored. Then I will do the steering. Rear end is after that. I really should have spent a few grand more and got the 8 in the first place. I have accepted the car as mine now and am going to turn it into a great restomod. My goal is to have it road worthy by July 4th. Will I make it?? I am damn sure gonna try.

 

thanks, i have considered doig that and am still considering the only thing is engine dress kits for i6 is not as readily available.

 

The easiest way to do the swap is to find someone local to you that you can visit with about it. Sure made it alot easier when I did mine, but I wasn't on the VMF at that time. If we are all you've got, we'll help you do everything. ::
