i bet this has been discussed several times here,,just wanted to hear it again i guess....wondering why i have yet to run across a set of bare w/phosphate hood hinges...weve parted 60 mustangs and cougars here and have many restorations and never a bare set of hinges..always one color black or another.did everyone rattle can theirs shortly after buying new??..i even have a set of hinges i pulled from a 69 cougar that are faded black on the outside and quite glossy black on the hidden area where they bolt to the apron and on this surface on both are a yellow paint date stamped into each...of april 69...these are on my 69 mach 1 now...are they service replacement??? im not trying to prove anyone wrong or start an argument,,just wonder if im the only one who seems to see only painted hinges...now i have seen a couple sets that where completely rusted so iguess they could have been bare to begin with...anyone have some pics of original car with bare ones???

Phosphate is not "bare metal", it is a coating to prevent rust. It has a gray appearance, with varying color from light to dark, which is a yield of how long the parts are left in the zinc-phosphate solution.

Keep in mind that other car lines, such as a Cougar, may have had different finish specs for hood hinges.

Phosphate hood hinges on Mustangs is quite well documented. Go to any national MCA event and you will usually see several examples of early Unrestored cars. Now, this discussion should not go without mentioning that from march '64 through to sometime in the fall of '64, Mustang hood hinges were indeed painted semi-gloss black.

Phosphate in general is a poor plating treatment for rust prevention over the long haul. Add to that that phosphate does not have a distinct look as zinc or dichromate.

Would also suggest if you can, to take a look at some low mileage cars for a source since we all know how used parts cars can be.  On those they are only one color typically - RUST

gotcha,,,,im not in disagreement at all,,just know i have several low mile and definately never wrecked cars here and all have painted hinges,,,painted top and bottom,,meaning hoods had to have been off to do so....i may take teh hinges off my mach 1 and shoot some pics of the paint and markings on the backsides of them and see what you guys think....just hate the thought of re adjusting the hood,,lol,,thanks guys

I have noted the exact opposite - every unrestored car I have seen had phospate coated hinges.

Jeff.... how many terabytes (or is it up to yottabytes) of Mustang photos do you have... ???

And do you use the Dewey Decimal or "Speegle Stang" System to keep them organized?!?!? ;) :p

I try to keep file size down so it does not get too out of hand.

Yes finding stuff is often a pain ( I know I've got a picture here somewhere) For about half they are just organized by the VIN number of the car they came from
