I ordered the 1 piece transition pan. It is the one that has the shock brace already welded to it. It is from Dynacorn. Well the issue I have is that where it connects to the framerail, I cant get to... It is an inside flange. I have 2 options that I can see.

1. Cut open an area in order to get into the inner flange to weld it.

2. Seperate the entire top to gain access to weld it in.

If anyone has done this, please let me know what you did.

Also, does the inner wheelwell bottom go in front of the rocker panel tab, or behind it? Mine were not there so I dont know how it is supposed to be. Thanks.

transition install

I have installed one in my 68 fastback. First off you need to drill out the spot welds to seperate the shock crossmember from the pan on the new transition, I would suggest drilling thru the pan side. With the old transition out you can access all the points necessary to weld the new crossmember in first. One the crossmember is in then you have to try to get the pan into position. I ended up having to remove the back 4 to 6 inches of the floorpan to do this. Because my floor was bad at the intersection with the transition I was putting the under rear seat patch sections in anyway so along with that I bent up a new section for the back of the tunnel. Once the transition was fully replugged at the drilled out weld locations the rear floor patch panel and tunnel sections could be installed/replaced. If this does not make sense email me at wharris at triton.net did this two winters ago so I may be forgeting something. Finished product looks excellent. bill

So you went ahead and split them apart to install both the new shock brace and transition pan. I was hoping to not have to split them.I may see if I can just cut an opening in the transition pan to gain enough access to weld those inside tabs to the Framerails. The original is already out of the car.

Thanks.

Anyone else replace this part?

pan install

IIRC the flange on the frame rail prevents you from installing it as an assembly. And there is also the issue of accessing the tabs to weld. Splitting it back apart wasn't that big a deal, just use the smallest possible spot cutter. bill

I did the same as bill396. Seemed like the best way to do it. Once the top panel was off you could line up the shock brace and weld everywhere that needs welding. There is no way to weld correctly if you don't separate them. I also put more welds than the factory 3 on each tab for more strength. Then when it's time to weld the top panel back on, you just line up the spot welds and plug weld.

Thanks. Good pics of the way you did it too. Thanks. I guess I got a long weekend of welding in a rear framerail, shock brace, and transition pan.....LOL Thanks.

Man, I'm splitting one of the dynacorn transition pan/shock mounts now. Why in the HELL would dynacorn weld them together. This is freaking ridicuous! The bad thing is that I can't drill out from the top side because the shock mount isn't going back in since I'm putting in a 1 3/4 crossmembers for a Fox unequal 4 link and coil overs. If I drill it out from the top side, I'm going to have 40+ holes to fill. Sorry, just ranting! lol

I replaced mine but I did not seperate the two. I was installing a one piece floor so I cut away the rear floor where it overlaps the transition pan. I cut the two tabs off of the shock crossmember that go under the frame rail. Once installed I made two 90 degree tabs and welded them to the shock crossmember and the frame because you cannot access the inside. I also welded a small plate over the crossmember and frame rail where the tab was that I cut off.

Glazier Nolan recently did this to a 68 GT500 convertible. You can see some process pics on their site.

Here's one:

Finally got it done. Turns out there were 4 spot welds that I missed cutting out. Once I got those I was able to seperate the shock mount from the transition pan without damaging the pan or drilling any holes in it at all.

Dynacorn makes the subassemblies the same way Ford did. Ford assembled floor and rails, the brought the sides together, then the roof. Four big pieces.
