I really tried to find this out by searching but can't find anything definitive. I have an opportunity to get a 2004 Crown Vic Police Interceptor rear end for $100. Looks like most Crown Vic conversions are mid-late 90's up to 2002. I've seen mention of anything beyond 2002 not being the recommendation but no detailed information as to why.

Can someone share the differences between say a 2002 and 2004 rear end with additional details of the differences between Police Interceptor vs. standard Crown Vic rear ends (I know the brake size and vented rotors are different but that's about it.

And...is the 2004 PI rear end an easy swap similar to a 2002 or earlier swap?

I drove them for years. The CVPI rear end is an 8.8 and the diff is plenty durable but the wheel bearing and axle units are very weak in the later models for whatever reason. I think it's also a bit wide for a Mustang application unless narrowed, and if I was gonna go to that trouble and expense I would just spend the money on a good 9", 8" or an Explorer 8.8, in that order.

I couldn't swear to it, but while the 1998-2011 body is the same, sometime around 2001 or 2002 they changed the type and location of the trailing arms and moved them further outboard (big old aluminum control arm) and the brakes probably had to be redesigned. I think there is an Autoguide forum on the P-71 / Panther platform cars and the swaps that work and don't would be easily searched on there.

I hear you there. I guess easy and simple are relative to the guy doing the work.
For me, the afterrmarkets look straight forward as do the late 90's CV. Pretty much bolt in but not much mention of 2003 and later or PI being of simular "ease" or what it will take to make it work.
