Is my P/S pump pulley too small?

I may just be suffering from pulley envy but I measured across my current power steering pulley and it's outside diameter (edge to edge on the front face) is only 5" (looks more like 4 7/8"). The pulleys for sale at the various retailers seem to be 5 3/16". My last P/S pump burned up while I was doing about 70 with 2.79:1 rear end and a standard C4 and standard diameter main pulley.

So, do y'all think that the smallish pump pulley was spinning the pump too fast and burned it up? Or, is the pulley correct(ish) for a 1968 289?

List your pump tag ID number if still on it, also your engine application?
There are charts in books based on application will tell you what pulley number/size you should use if doing stock setups.

The engine is a (late) '68 289 (C-Code). The pump is on its way to CHOCK for rebuild but I wrote the tag info down and left it at home. I'll list it later today. Thanks!

The 4 7/8" pulley is the generic vintage Mustang one. It does a great job of
overdriving the P/S pump and making for twitchy/overboosted power steering.
A 7" is about a 20% speed reduction but might be too much. They were
Shelby's pick for the '67 cars.
Personally, I like the 6" size. Some of the 302 trucks had them in the 80's
before the switch to serpentine occurred.

For '68, book lists "HBA-AC,AD,AN".
For 302:
w/o AC, emissions,super cool, with dual belts "6AA"
w/o AC, dual belts, super cool "7AE"
with AC, w/o dual belts, or super cool. "7AD"

Thanks guys. I think I'll go ahead and give a slightly-larger pulley a try. Anybody have a used one laying around that they'd like to sell? Surface rust okay.

Okay, update. The pulley I have is a 7AD according to Mustangtek:

5 " diameter
Overall depth : 1.22"
3/8" sheeve width

Ford Service Part Number ID C7AZ-3A733-D

Applications:

Ok67 289 Ford Fairlane Mustang Falcon w/AC
Ok68 302 Ford Fairlane w/AC
Ok68 289 302 Mustang Falcon w/AC
Ok69 302 351 Ford w/AC

None of which match my specs as I don't have AC.

3/8" Sheeve? Looks like the others are 5/16 or 7/16. So now I'm really not sure what to buy. LOL!

I think you could probably spin the power steering pump at 5,000 engine rpm all day with a 5 inch pulley and not "burn it up" unless there was something already wrong with it, something wrong in the system, or the wrong fluid was being used.

Well, it was a NAPA rebuilt unit so it's conceivable that something could have been wrong with it. Type F fluid. I'm having Chock take a look at rebuilding an original pump (different pump than the one that went bad) for me so maybe all will be fine. I just wanted to cover my bases.

As a final follow-up to this. I wound up purchasing a 7AA pulley off of eBay. Chock's eBay pulleys were all 7/16" wide sheeves and I didn't feel comfortable with that width as I think that 5/16" will better match my crank pulley sheeve, which in itself was a bit of a compromise. Someday I'll have to gather up the proper factory-number-matching pulleys for my car (damned things are expensive!). :)

That's a 5 1/4" pulley. Not going to do much to slow things down.

Here's 5Z-A1A (80-86 302 truck) at about 6" diameter with a standard
'66 belt driving it (over the water pump pulley rather than the ridiculous
OE belt routing)
Becomes almost a deep-groove pulley with that standard size belt....
definitely doesn't have any issues jumping off the pulley at high rpm.
