I saw the movie "John Wick" today. As you may have seen in the trailers, Keanu Reeves drives a Mustang in this movie. In the trailers, I couldn't tell if the car was a Mach 1 or what. Although the Mustang is John Wick's car and is extremely important as part of the plot, the car has very little actual screen time. So, it was hard to get a good look at it. Anyway, here are my observations with no real spoilers for the movie:
- John Wick's Mustang is definitely a 1969 fastback.
- It has the non-functional hood scoop standard for the 69/70 Mach 1.
- It has hood pins like a like a 1969 Mach 1.
- The hood is not blacked out like a '69 Mach 1. The car is painted a dark gray or charcoal color and has two, low-gloss black "rally stripes" on the hood, roof and rear of the car.
- This Mustang has the deck lid and chin spoilers.
- The car has Magnum 500 wheels, but I think they are painted differently than the factory paint scheme for the Magnum 500s.
- In some scenes, the car has Firestone "Wide Oval" tires. However, in one particular scene, the car clearly has BF Goodrich Radial T/A tires. So, I'm not sure if they built more than one car for the movie, or just did a tire swap during filming.
- There is a brief interior shot. It's a deluxe interior, as a '69 Mach 1 would have. I did notice the steering wheel is not correct for a Mach 1. I'm not sure what type of steering wheel it is, but my friend, who saw the movie with me and is also a Mustang guy, said he thought it was a Shelby wheel.
While the rally stripes aren't my thing on a 69 fastback, overall, the car is pretty cool. It appears mostly as a factory 69 fastback without a bunch of garish add-ons. (Nope. Not going to start another "Eleanor" thread.
)
In one scene, Wick is at a gas station and someone is admiring the Mustang. "Boss 429", the guy says. "1970?" At this point, John Wick corrects the guy by stating it's a 1969. But he doesn't correct him about the car clearly NOT being a Boss 429. So, I don't know what's up with this exchange of dialogue. (??)
John Wick also drives a 1970 Chevelle SS in the film. At this point, my friend said, "Traitor!". :}0
Oh, my opinion of the movie? Overall, "John Wick" is a much better than average action flick. It has an EXTREMELY high body count, a pretty fast pace, an appropriate sense of humor here and there and will no doubt be a new movie franchise.
So, if the sequels continue to feature the '69 fastback, we can expect those cars to become even more popular and even more expensive.
