KYB Gas-A-Just vs GR2 Force Data

I took a few data points comparing the two different shocks to help quantify my butt-bump-o-meter. My numbers aren't terribly accurate, but its something (sorry I don't have a shock dynamometer handy).

I just recently replaced my rear KYB Gas-A-Just shocks with the GR2 shocks and it made one hell of a difference in ride quality in the short distance I drove it today. The goal of the swap was to reduce oversteer and improve ride quality. It seems the older I get, the softer I am.

Anyway, with the help of two coworkers we were able to determine the force vs velocity of each shock (in compression only).

An extrapolated graph of the data looks like this:

We were only able to get data points for a velocity up to about 1.5 inches/sec (while still maintaining some level of accuracy), which is barely getting over the knee in your standard shock force/velocity graph.

I asked KYB for their published information for these shocks and they just got back to me.

They gave me this info for compression:
GR2 - 99 lbs @ 11.8 inch/sec
Gas-A-Just - 121 @ 11.8 inch/sec

Not even close to my numbers. Hmmmm?

You are correct, shocks are not linear. I think my measurements were still in the knee portion of the range and hadn't leveled off yet (which would make my graph interpretation way off). Once past the knee, they are more or less linear (depending on the shock of course).

The numbers I was given from KYB don't seem right at all from the few tests I ran.

KYB- A very good shock for street/strip applications. If you are running a softer tires on the street (such as BFG that are a mix of steel & nylon belted or tires with profiles not shorter than 50 series), these provide the extra stiffness that you need for both comfort & stability. The Exel-G’s (formerly GR-2) are the equivalent to the Edelbrock IAS automatic adjusting units. Overall, stiffness between the Gas-a-just and the GR2’s are the same, the difference is the GR-2's valving which stiffens things up from a oem setting to that of the Gas-a-just units
