Lap Joint Band Clamp Sizing

I feel like a dummy. I bought a set of 2 inch lap joint band clamps for my new 2 inch exhaust, and they don't fit.

I broke the bolt on one trying to make it work.

So, I measured the outside diameter of the lap joint on the pipes (this is the Flowmaster OEM-style exhaust Virginia Classic Mustang sells) and I get about 2 3/16 inches.

Closest size to that I see offered in these things is 2 1/4 inch. Is that the way to go?

I really want to avoid using the saddle clamps...

Guessing you got some off-brand ripoffs of the Torctite band clamps.

Band clamps are sized by the primary pipe diameter, not the expanded slip section. If that's over-expanded, then that's a quality issue. Most exhaust pipe is .060" (1/16") wall thickness, so it should come out to 2 1/8" OD plus a little for an easy slip fit.

All of the genuine TorcTite clamps I've used had no issues conforming to the various diameters, but the cheapo knockoffs are mostly junk, with butter soft fasteners. Many places show pics of the genuine TorcTite clamps, but ship you the knockoffs, Jegs did that to me on my last order. AP Exhaust carries the genuine deal, Summit has them for $12.

If you can't get the lap joint band clamps to work, maybe get some plain band style and cut slits into the expanded sections.

After trying three different items, I just went with the standby saddle clamps. As much as I wanted the ideal, I couldn't wait for the 5th of never for it...
