Hello all,
I started my 302 / T5 install today and thugs went okay. Couple of small issues usually involving me looking for tools or bolts that I had set down. The big problem I have now is the transmission is too far to the passenger side of the car to put the crossmember on. The engine is loosely bolted to its' mounts and looks to be sitting square and centered in the engine compartment, but the transmission still has towards the driver's side of the car about an inch. I was wondering if perhaps I had my frame side motor mounts on the wrong side of the compartment. I had an original pair, one was stamped with an R and one had no stamp. I put the one stamped R on the passanger side of the car and the one without a stamp is on the driver's side. Did I flip that around? If not how do I go about relocating the T5 so I can put the crossmember on?
Thanks everybody!

Yes, the T5 shifter will favor the right side of the hole but the mount point should be simply reward of the original. I was worried your cross-member might be of a less that perfect design. I think I might rather mod that before stressing the engine mounts in another direction.

Somewhere in the 67-8 models there was a single oddball motor mount, if I recall correctly, that maybe you can search about or someone could clarify here for you to make sure.

I believe the oddball mount was for the '67s. My crossmember is from modern driveline and fits well. The issue was the passenger side motor mount binding and not seating correctly, that's why I had to lift the engine on the driver's side, to get it to drop into place like it should.

Thanks for the suggestions everybody, perhaps adjustable mounts are in my future but for now used OE frame side mounts are all I can afford. I did manage to get the engine and transmission installed correctly today. Here's what I did in case anyone runs into this in the future. I took out both the long bolts that connect the frame side mounts to the insulators on the block. I used the engine hoist and a floor jack to move the transmission / engine into place then bolted up the T5 and transmission crossmember. With the transmission in place I moved back to the engine bay. I had to take the insulator off the passenger side of the block and spread the ears apart as they were binding on the mount. With the insulators fitting the mounts correctly I then tried to drop the engine into place, the the passenger side mount was still off by a little bit. I used the hoist on the driver's side of the engine to roll the passenger side mount into place and pinned it with a long bolt. I then simply let the engine settle back into place and the driver's side insulator and mount mated up correctly. I then checked to make sure the engine was level (it was) and that the shifter of the T5 lined up with the hole (it did, I can run it through all gears with no issue). I'm very happy to have the engine in, now it's time to hook everything up and cross my fingers for break in.
Hope this can help someone in the future.
Thanks again all!

Funny, but I'm sort of going through the same thing myself. For '68/302's the oem motor mounts are interchangeable from left to right. The mere fact that one of yours has a side designation on it would cause some concern to look into. I've got my 302/T5 installed to the point that everything lines up beautifully except the passenger side motor mount holes are off by one kattywampus inch. I KNOW all my dimensions are good, so it has to be the crappy mounts I bought. After wrestling with it for most of a day trying different things I just threw in the towel and ordered some RMP adjustable mounts. They arrive Monday and I know from helping Dan Babb put his motor in how sweet those things are. Expensive, but I'm thinking very worth it and they'll make hooking it all up straight a breeze.

In the course of my frustrations with this I went and looked at reviews of those mounts I had purchased a few years ago. They were the basic cheap ones from CJ's. The reviews on them were horrid. I was talking to Babb about this and he suggested they might make solid toilet paper holders. That may actually be their "highest and best use."
