Magnum 500, 69 Mach 1

Hi,

I think I will go for Magnum 500 on my 69 Mach 1
I'm thinking 15-7" with 235-60-15 in front and 15-8" with 255-60-15 in rear.

Or if the above don't fit, then 15-7" for all 4, with 235 in front, and 255 in rear.

Will that fit my car?

235 is probably too wide on the front with a 15x7 wheel. The tire will hit the upper ball joint. Currently on my car I have 15x7 with 215 on the front and 15x8 with 275 in the rear. 275's require rolling the fender lips unless you have the rear of the car raised. I don't like the look of the car with the back raised, so mine is lowered.

According to a builder with 50+ 1969 Mustangs under his belt, go with 15x7 with a 4.25 backspace, for the wheels. They should have a 5 x 4.5 lug pattern. He recommends Specialty Wheels. At one time the shipping was $16 per wheel if ordered separately, but $50 per wheel when ordering four, so you may want to review current shipping rates.
The largest tire on the front that won't hit slightly under some conditions is a P235/60R15. If you want "the look" go with BF Goodrich TA Radials, with raised white letters. The second most popular tire is Cooper, which actually gets a slightly better satisfaction rating.

On My Boss I have 215 65’s on the front but they have rolled lips from the factory and fit with no rubbing. On the rear is 245 60’s and also have the stock Ford wheels and not sure the back spacing..

As an example, I went with Legendary Wheel Company aluminum Magnum 500s for my '70 Mach 1. They're lighter and less expensive than the steel versions. While not an exact match to the factory Magnum 500s, I think they look really good. Those wheels get a lot of compliments and questions, so it seems I'm not the only one who likes them.


I went with 16" x 8" because it's getting harder to find 14" and 15" tires. I think 16" wheels still have a classic look as well. (I don't like the "black rubber band tires" look on classic cars.) If you're interested in the exact size of tires I'm running, I can get back to you. I don't recall at the moment. They fit very well with no rubbing. Although I rolled my front fenders and rear quarters, the tires would fit fine without it.

I've got to say your wheels look good. If those wheels had been available when I bought my Magnums 11 years ago, I might have gone with them instead of the stock steel wheels.

I just bolted them on. They're not as shiny as chrome, but they're not a brushed aluminum either. Maybe a not-quite-polished? Here's a closer pic:

I zoomed in on the pic and I can see the tire is a 245/50R16. I could go a little wider if I wanted. Those tires are Cooper ultra high performance all season radials. I really like them. I went with an all season because I like to drive in the mountains where I can get snow any time of the year.

As I understand it, from the above, the I must go for 15x7" for all 4 wheels.
Also, as I understand it 235-60 in front, will be close, but it will fit, and 255-60 seams also to be ok.

I've found the wheels (new) here in Denmark, for a good prices, it's $200 each shipped to my door.
It's the same price for 7" and 8"

BS is 4 1/4"
