I am in discussion with someone on Long island relative to purchasing a car. According to this individual classic cars are not Titled in New York State. A friend of mine is an investigator for the Division of Motor Vehicles in Delaware. Which is where I would title the car. He tells me New York is a Title State. Can someone from New York shed some light on this.
Another potential issue is the the car is a 67 fifth digit reads "5" on the registration not "S". Appears to be a typo by New York State Motor vehicle, but could be a mess to get fixed. At any rate I need to clear up title issue, before I tackle Vin problem.

New York does not title older vehicles. I know this for a fact. I grew up there and left four years ago. I owned three classic mustangs, and not one had a title. My current one was from the original owner and didn't have a title. A simple bill of sale and the previous registration signed by the last owner is all you need.

even in 68, no titles!I believe it's up to 1985.what you need is a registration in the previous owners name, but it must say TRANSFERABLE written right on it,and signed over to you on the back.other reg's look the same but WILL say NON-TRANSFERABLE,that kind won't do.you will also need a bill of sale in the same p.o. name with price and vin number saying it is sold to your name.

I just bought a car from Long Island...and you are right...NO TITLE.

I am a dealer so I verified things with the DMV..on their website.

No titles for 1972 and older vehicles. Just a transferrable registration. It is the size of a credit card and you need this to get a title in your state.

I just bought a car from a guy who had it registered in NY. On the back of his registration card it has a space for him to sign it off if he sells it, providing the front of the registration says it is transferable. This means they did not print a paper title, although the car is titled. If the registration had said non-transferable,it means the state printed a paper title and you need the title to transfer ownership.

As it turns out, his was transferable, so he signed off the registration and a bill of sale, and I am all set. I am not a dealer.
