I am looking at an old restoration book. It lists a paint code R, dark green metallic for 66. It also lists Ivy green metallic for 66 under SPECIAL. What are the differences?

I don't know about the "Dark Green Metallic" , but my '66 GT Fastback was delivered as paint code R and is listed as Ivy Green.

Ford was open to suggestion as to what color to paint cars, sometimes using next years' new colors as a sales promotion at the end of the year, or even prior colors. A friend of mine once had a 66 GT that was Acapulco Blue, a 1967 color.

In 1966.... If you were a Ford Dealer "In the know" and had some small pull... You could specially order any 1966 Mustang in any of the available "Thunderbird" colors that were available. Later on in the year, Those same dealers were also offered a chance to order 1966 Mustangs in some 1967 "Pre-View" Colors as well. ....But, If you were an A+ Rated Ford Dealer, You could order a Mustang in literally any color you wanted...literally. There are some documented instances where certain Businesses ordered a specific "special" paint code for a Mustang and the Ford Factory painted it that way-Yes, The Ford Factory...not an aftermarket painter. One instance that I can think of off hand was a Business Owner who wanted his 1966 Mustang Fastback painted a crazy specific color of Orange to match his businesses colors. The car still exists today and it was Factory painted by Ford. Other similar examples exist also..

Attached is the "official" FoMoCo 1966 Color Chart. Note that on the back there are both "Color Names" shown, and "Promotional Color Names" shown.
In your case (and in mine as well for my '66), for Code "R" it shows the color as "Dark Green Metallic", and the Promotional name as "Ivy Green".

"Mystery" solved.

Ive got the '66 R color and have seen it listed as different names as well, dark green metallic, dark green poly and ivy green depending on the source of the info. Lincoln/Merc with the same PPG code was Spanish Moss and Olive Mist.
I'll be damned if I can tell the difference with it and the '67 moss green but they do have a different code.
