I am very new at restomods, and not sure about wiring. I was told the best thing to do was to buy a new racing harness from ford since the engine/ transmission I was given did not have a harness. Others have told me to get a donor and adapt it, but that seems pretty intense for a beginner like me. Look for best options. Thanks.

The Ford 5.0 harness is a pretty simple and stand alone harness. But they are getting up there in age. If you can find a good used one they're pretty straight forward to modify but you might be ahead by buying new. I guess what I'm saying is if you don't let it scare you the factory harness is feasible for someone with a basic understanding of how it works.

What year is the 5.0 engine? Do you have the computer and just need the harness, or do you need the computer as well? Is it a speed density or mass air set-up? If speed density, you can find the harness as well as the computer for super-cheap (because they are less desirable). Just make sure you get the right harness for your year set-up. Good luck, it's a fun project!

If you don't have a harness or an ECU, I would consider an aftermarket alternative, such as the Holley HP system. It is speed density based and will have an easily programable ECU and a new harness.

I've done both. I pulled the harness from my donor car (91 LX). It worked, but there was a lot of extra wiring, and it generally looked like crap. I took it apart to strip out all the excess wiring that I didn't need to run, and found that it was a LOT of work, and the wiring was old, brittle, connectors broke easily...

I ordered a new Ford Racing standalone harness...MUCH cleaner, easier to work with, easier to hide wiring... If you're not on a TIGHT budget, the new harness is the way I would recommend.

Ive got a ECU, a modified factory harness and a couple of mass air meters Id let go if you need any of that stuff. I personally think the ford racing harness is a much cleaner install.

I haven't worked with it, but Painless Performance offers a Ford 1986-1995 Fuel Injection Wiring Harness P/N 60510. My Father has a 1966 Fastback with an EFI 5.0 T5 drivetrain. The previous owner used a stock harness from a donor vehicle. The car runs great, but the wiring is a mess. Doing my own research, I think going with a new harness is the way to go while having a spare donor harness to pull original connections where needed.
