Rebuilding Edelbrock Carb

One part of getting my GT/CS back on the road is to rebuild the carb. I have an Edelbrock 1403 500 CFM with electric choke that is about 20 years old. Not that many miles on it, and it's been on the shelf for many years, so I don't think there is a lot of wear and tear.

From reading various posts here, it looks like the recommended source for a rebuild kit is Mike's Carburetors. After reading through his web pages, I have a few questions:

1) Brass floats are a "suggestion", are these really better than whatever is in there from Edelbrock?

2) Any other pieces suggested beyond what is included in the rebuild kit? Here's link to the contents of the rebuild kit.

3) His installation instructions mention soaking the carb in Simple Green. Haven't heard this one before. Has anyone tried this? It certainly eliminates the issue of how to dispose of really nasty chemicals used to clean carbs.

4) Any recommendations on books for the Edelbrock carb?

Re: "4) Any recommendations on books for the Edelbrock carb?"

The Edelbrock Users Manual is very good for tuning, etc. Edelbrock also has tuning videos on youtube.

Also, there are lots of videos on youtube for rebuilding Edelbrock carbs. Example (there are others as well)...

Finally, one carb rebuilding trick I had never heard of before

In episode 5 of the 2014 PowerNation TV show "Detroit Muscle", they spend a lot of time demonstrating how to rebuild an Edelbrock Carburetor. I can stream Detroit Muscle on Amazon, but I'm not sure if it's because I have a Motor Trend TV subscription. You can pony up $6.00 to watch it on their web site. If I was rebuilding an Edelbrock carb, I think would it would be worth the $6.00. There's a little more to it than you might expect.

UPDATE: Well, I just watched that Hagerty video and it's pretty good!

Thanx for the responses. I'll take a look at those videos before I tear into the carb.

Also, I did a little more digging and there is a page on the Simple Green website about using their Simple Green Pro HD Heavy-Duty Cleaner for cleaning a carb. This is their purple stuff. Apparently if you use the 'original' Simple Green it can discolor the aluminum after a couple of hours, but the purple stuff is a different formula where this is supposedly not an issue. YMMV
