Stripe ideas needed for '68 coupe paint job

Hi guys/gals...

I'm bored here at work and looking ahead to (hopefully) next fall when I can get my mustang in for paint and body work.

I'm leaning heavily towards a modern paint that I just saw on a Lexus... it was a DEEP red with a alot of small metallic flake in it but when the light hit it correctly it looked like candy apple red. From any other angle, it looked a little brighter than burgundy.

Anyway... does anyone have any experience with adding stripes to a '68 coupe with turn-signal hood? I'm looking for something unconventional but understated, if that's possible.

I don't like the concept of starting the stripes from the turn-signals in the hood as it doesn't look good to me because it isn't continuous. I also can't just do the normal racing stripes because the turn signal hood will break up those lines and make it look bad.

Any ideas? I'm also considering some type of 2 color scheme instead of striping, but I really haven't seen anything that grabs my attnetion other than a 67/68 coupe posted here that had a blacked out hood, etc and an orange body... that looked sick.

Well I read you don't like the stripes from the turn signal hood but i thought my first car that i sold looks really good with them. The stripes are gray on candyapple red so its not nearly as dramatic as black stripes would be. http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x209/67nole302/me007-1-1.jpg

I did a 68 1/2 cobra jet looking stripe on a turn signal hood once on a previously owned 68 I had. I thought it looked pretty good. I'm one of those people though that likes to stick with period correct colors. I just don't think some of the newer colors look right on a vintage mustang.
Another option for stripes you could think about is something like the 70 mach 1 hood stripe or similar to what I did....

I do think that the stripes starting from the turn signals is a good option, but I just have a feeling that I would get sick of it after about a year.

The stripes don't extend all the way to the tip of the hood and because the stripes are as wide as the turn signal openings they are too wide for the car IMO.

Does anyone have a pic of a supersnake stripe or any other non-conventional ones on a 67/68 with turn signal hood?

I think on a TS hood stripes that go past the TS look funny. You could change to a different hood. We put the factory stripes on the son's 68. It was W. White with the stripes from the factory. Now it is Bonzai Blue with the stripes. It has a vinyl top so continuing the stripes over the top ws not needed.
Below is a pic. I also have some others from a higher angle I'll try to post.

I see your point, and I think I agree. I don't think that I have even seen a 67/68 with TS Hood that has any other sort of striping... maybe there's a reason for that, lol.

I most definitely can NOT change to a different hood. I love the look of the turn signal hood... it adds to the lines/look of the car while still being understated... I could do a hood scoop of some sort, but that is not understated at all.

For "different" you could look at a "modified" 70 Boss 302 look? Across the cowl behind the hood or at its rear edge, down the fender then back, maybe merge it into a Cal Specail type stripe??? Not sure if it would "work" or not....

I saw a new CS on the Ford lot that was Black with a matte black stripe. Your ghost cali stripe reminded me of that. It looked pretty cool.

Thanks guys, I'll have to see if I can find a pic of the black w/ black matte stripe. Sounds bad ass.

Now... if I were to do the C/S stripe on the side, would it be overkill to look into some other form of striping? I'm leaning towards yes...

Here is another pic of the son's 68 with the stock style stripes, but they are gloss under the clear instead of matte.

Or you could go with this two-tone and stripe combo. Just leave the Jackalope off the hood.

Have you thought about just using a decal if you want them matte? Not as big of a problem if you get sick of the look.

Personally if you where going to strip the hood on a '68, I think the c-stripe in matte black as well would be pretty awesome.

The black on black stripes are sweet IMO. But I'm going for the 2-tone look like 1965GTFB mentioned. Still haven't figured out a color yet though.

Hmm... all of you have VERY good ideas.

Let me know what you think of this idea... it's kinda of a combination of a bunch of them.

I was thinking of using the two-tone scheme as well, with this color as my base:
Royal Ruby Metallic

Then use black (either matte or gloss) as the top portion of the two-tone...

BUT!!! We're not done. Let me know what you think of this idea...

Instead of having the stock stripes as an entirely different color, I was thinking of just doing an outline of those stripes. They would be painted in the ruby red color to contrast the black portion of the two-tone. It would basically be a pin-striping of the stock-style stripes that 1965GTFB has on that '68 coupe.

I would need to get creative so that the pinstriping is even noticeable, but I think that would look really really good. Now if there was only some way to visualize it, lol.

Hmm... Stephen67 has a good point...

If I am going to do a two-tone scheme... would it look better to have a matte black C-stripe contrasting with the red on the side of the car, or a red pin-stripe outline of the stock stripes to contrast with the black on top of the car?

I think both would definitely be overkill but it's hard to say w/o seeing it.

Ok, while it may seem like I am talking to myself.... I really am. Wait, what? lol.

Anyway, I found a picture of a modern mustang with the paint scheme I am thinking of... the red I want would be darker and more metallic but this is a good example:

Now after looking at that car, it seems to me that a black C-stripe would look great on there.

What do you guys think of the idea of doing a pinstripe outline of the stock stripes that start from the turn signals... overkill or decent idea?

i think you are wanting something like this....

That's almost identical!

Any more pictures of that car?

Now... I see that the car doesn't have a C-stripe. How do you think that would look?

i only have 1 more pic of this car, here it is:

c stripe might be going a little far, do you like the stripe that is on this one? notice at the rear how it fins out. i kinda like it.

#23 ·
Are you talking about the gray stripe on the top line of the fenders?

I didn't notice that stripe at first... I thought it was glare or a reflection. That might work and it's also nice because it seperates the black and red nicely.

I'd love to be able to work in some other type of striping, but maybe it's not in the cards.

My new plan is to find a picture of a 67/68 coupe with turn signal hood from directly above the hood. I'll import that into photoshop and then add the outline of the stock stripes that I was talking about... I think that could work.

found another pic. good luck on figuring out your paint scheme. maybe use a candy coat in the areas you want to stripe to make a almost ghost candy stripe.
