i am in the process of converting to the T5 from my manual 3 speed
ive talked with modern driveline for parts i might need
they suggested a $255 shifter that moves it back 1"
i really dont want to spend that kind of $$
my question to T5 owners
what did you use for a shifter

Thx
Steve

I went with the cheap hurst cast piece that came with my used t5, no issues, at least it has shifter stops and those are a must IMHO. I did slot my motor mounts a bit so I could slide the motor back that last 1/2" to get it lined up with the floor hole.

I have seen a trick to take the rubber out of the stock style fox body shifter to make it work fine. I can't justify big money for one, if you buy just get one with the adjustable stops and check Craig's list for one.

Have the pro 5.0 in mine, kind of big and had to take a little off the front of the opening.. Has stops and shifts well, have the same shifter as wilit.. looks like an Hurst shifter, used a 68 boot as well to cover the larger shifter... Can post a pic if you want to see it..

Aha- You used the larger 69-70 boot and bezel to cover the larger hole. Good choice, much better than any aftermarket boot. Won't work with a console, but then, I don't use a console in my 66, either.

I adapted the original 3-spd shifter by grinding a little flatness on the lower part of the shaft (after severing the shaft from the lower bracket), and drilling two holes in it to bolt it to the T5 stud. A 5 spd shift knob was then fitted. It made for a very strong shifter and positioned the knob in the exact position for me. A 69-70 type shift boot was also used.

FWIW I used the popular Hurst shifter lever, it was kinda short for me in this car so I made a simple adapter out of some steel that changed the tilt and raised it about an inch, it works kinda perfect for me. These levers are common and cheaper than many of the shifters sold specifically to fit with the vintage cars.

This pic was taken before I welded the shift stop back on, you can see where I sliced it off. It was sticking out way further than it needed to and was making a lump in the leather shift boot.

I guess I got lucky. Here in the rust belt, old cars are long gone out of the junk yards. But, four years ago, there was a 68 6 popper Mustang with it's three speed still in it.
Took the shifter handle, lopped off the botton and weled in a peice of flat stock. Fits like Ford made it (well they did).
I have NO idea how these guys want to sell them for $140.00

Guys, he's not talking about the shifter handle. He's talking about the shifter.

I bought this for my 5-speed conversion, but I don't think I paid $245 for it. It does put the shifter into the center of your shifter hole, but, I'm not sure it's really necessary.
Dude,, your absolutely correct,, that is the part
i was quoted $255,, i think their website says $245
still to much $$ for me
when i do get my T5(hopefully this weekend) i will go with the stock shifter on the car and i would like to modify my 3 speed stock shifter to fit
if thats not possible i will be looking to buy one that is close to my manual 3 speed shift handle
thanks for all the help,,, im sre ill be back when its time to install

Are you talking about the shifter handle or the shifter itself? Either way it is not a necessary mod but it is an upgrade. I drove the stock shifter for a while but then upgraded to the steeda Tri-ax short shifter (Pro 5.0 is good too) It is an awesome but unnecessary upgrade. It is really cool to click into the gears with no guessing.

I also used UPR's billet shifter to get the knob back closer to me. I wish it was about an inch longer though.

Ever think of finding a piece of chromed tube, threading it inside on either end, and using a stud for the end with the ball and thread it onto the existing handle? Too short, use 2.

Mr. Gasket - Fuel Pumps and Performance Gaskets

Most people find that the stock-style late-model shifter sticks are too much of a "reach" when a T5 is swapped into an early model car. I did a little research a while back and found several alternatives from Hurst. These looked like the best fits. I think most people will want 8" - 10" in height, and 3" - 7" of curve back.

5380015 - 8" up, 3" back, chrome steel, 3/8-16 thread
5380100 - 10" up, 4.75" back, chrome steel, 3/8-16 thread
5380178 - 8" up, 3" back, natural aluminum, 7/16-20 thread (GT350Clone)
5380179 - 10" up, 5.5" back, natural aluminum, 7/16-20 thread
5380201 - 9.5" up, 5.7" back, black aluminum, 7/16-20 thread
5384106 - 10" up, 5.5" back, chrome, 3/8-16 thread
5386643 - 7.5" up, 9.5" back, chrome, 3/8-16 thread
5387436 - 10" up, 5" back, chrome, 3/8-16 thread
5388009 - 10.5" up, 3" back, chrome, 3/8-16 thread
