I did the t5 swap back in January and the car ran fine until about may. The problem recently has been that it won't shift into reverse either at all or will with grinding. Another weird problem is that the shifter throw changed one day. Like one day 1st gear would put the shift knob almost up to the dash panel and the next day it wouldn't go half that far but would still engage first. I was told. By a transmission shop to replace the clutch which I had done today. I still have the same issues. Any ideas on what's wrong? Clutch fork, bearings, input shaft? I'm lost.

input shaft sticking in the pilot bushing? Even with the clutch disengaged this will keep the input shaft turning and cause grinding when shifting from a dead stop. The shift throw is weird though...

Do you shift it hard? The stock t-5 shifter doesnt have stops and has been known to bend internal shift forks if the driver bangs the gears. I had a similar issue, very very hard to move between 2-3 and I struggled to get reverse.

Negative on the shifting hard. I've been driving it a few days now and it might be fine. It's odd because the shift throw is definitely shorter than it used to be but it shifts through all the gears fine and if I go from 5th then reverse it works fine. I guess I'll wait a couple more days and see what happens. Another question though, is shifting to 5th or 4th to use the syncro to get into reverse an accepted SOP for these transmissions? I'm 22 and this is my first trans with no syncro for reverse and I find it weird that if you bought a Mustang in 1990 the dealer would mention, "Hey make sure you go into 5th or 4th before reverse because it doesn't have a syncro." Maybe it's just me. Thanks for the responses so far.

Man, I must be getting old. I've driven many cars where 1st gear didn't have a synchro...let alone reverse.

That's actually EXACTLY what they would say! A few years before that you could shift your automatic into great without hitting the brakes, and a few years before that if you leaned hard on the brakes they would lock up and the car would skid!(like in the movies!)
I'm just playing...obnoxious I know...sorry! :)

Why did I know putting my age was a bad choice haha. I've wired digital gauges, replaced the whole front suspension, converted to granada disc brakes, done the T5 conversion and each one has been a learning experience with the help of you guys. Always learning.

Yeah, just kidding around... All those leaded gas fumes from "back in the day"must have gotten to me!

:) And before that you had to use both feet and push really hard to stop going downhill. Just before that you had to grab the crank from under your seat and get out to start it... Those were the days when I had to walk 7 miles to school, uphill both ways....

you can check your shifter for shift stops...it could have some that's loose, hence the different throw...pull the boot off and check for shift stops.

The t5's will grind in reverse (though 92 0r 93 up t5's do have a syncro'd reverse...however if it's grinding TOO much in reverse, this is a sign that your clutch adjustment is too loose. Another way of confirming this is it may be a slightly difficult to get into any gear while at a stop, and the clutch may grab right off the floor. Try playing with your clutch adjustment if it's grinding too much
