I would like to install a tachometer in my 67 GTA 390 fastback (always thought it was factory standart on a GT390 model).
Any suggestions where to buy?
Thank you

You can find them on ebay and on craigslist. Sometimes you have to buy the whole cluster to get it.

In a way you might be better off with the whole cluster since that way you get the upgraded odometer that went with it too.

Out of curiosity, are you going to put in the 6K tach or the 8k tach?

Good idea, since the tach will not fit in the standard cluster.

You did not specify if you wanted a 'correct' tach to fit in the right side of the cluster.

Those can be pretty hard to find and will cause you to relocate the volt and oil pressure gauges, unless you get luck and find a complete cluster.

If you are just looking for a 'stock' appearance, you have a couple other options.

I istalled one of the aussie retroguage mini-tachs in the 'clock' hole on my '67. Its not as nice as the larger tach, but it works and has a stock-ish look.

Your other option is to find a tach from a cougar that will also fit in the large hole. I forget the name, but there is a member here that can re-print the face to make them look more like the mustang tach. I think he can also restore and convert them from 6k to 8k etc.

If you go this route, you will still need at least an Oil Pressure gauge. I think you can get the OP guage out of a '68 cluster and put it in the top-center 'clock' hole.

....just a few ideas.

As others have already indicated, you have several options. By far, the simplest choice is to install a mini tach in the space for the clock, wire it up like a modern tachometer and you are good to go.

If, you want a "correct" installation for concourse purposes, you will need both a 6000 rpm tachometer and the 120 mph speedometer with resettable trip odometer. The main underdash wiring and the cluster harness will need to be modified to allow for the tachometer and the switch from Ammeter and Oil Pressure gauges to Oil and Alt Charge warning lights. The charging system wiring under the hood also needs some modifications and the oil pressure sending unit needs to be replaced with one for a warning light. If you are comfortable working with automotive wiring or are planning to replace the main wiring harnesses anyway, this should pose no problem. Otherwise this might be a challenge.

Last, but not least, remember that these tachs are 46 years old and may need refurbishing to function. There are vendors that do specialize in restoring original functionality. There are other vendors that will convert the factory tach with modern electronics that require slightly different wiring.

At the end of the day, the differing cost of these options will usually drive or influence your choice.

Good luck with your choice.

That "Tribute" option looks REALLY nice!

But for $575 - $675 it better look good. Thats pretty pricey for an aftermarket tach.

Its nice that they include the Alt and Oil P lights. Still kind of expensive, but will be a good imatation of an original '67-'68 cluster.

I paid <$100 for my Aussie mini-tach, but I know they are a little more than than now.

I have just removed a cluster with 6k tach and trip speedo, cluster harness, engine bay harness and under dash harness from a 67 S-code. Except for the turn signal connector, the harnesses looks complete. The clock is not working and the tach skips once in a while but works fine most of the time.
I might sell this. What can I expect to get for these items?
