When the spring loses it tension it can begin to rattle. Option #2 is that the wrong valve is being used and pushed too far into the valve cover and causes interference with a rocker.
 
Bartl, my dad said it could be something to do with the ball inside that prevents air from flowing the wrong way. I'm pretty sure it's the right valve.
The PVC valve is simply a check valve to keep the air flowing out of the valve cover and into the manifold. It uses a small ball. You should be able to shake it and hear the ball rattle. I wonder if there is inconsistent vacuum causing the ball to drop on one cylinder? This would imply a bad cylinder not pulling vacuum. Try hooking up a vacuum gauge. If there is a problem you will send the gauge stop every time that cylinder fires, and the tick occurs.
