Trac-loc, yes. How wide of a tire are you running there?

 

I would go with a trac-lock not a full posi. I just installed one that works works like a champ. Spur that pony and both the rear just fry. :: And it goes straight too! ::
A full posi (or as they are also called detroit locker)and your going to have problems turning. The trac loc will slightly chirp when you really put it in a tight slow turn. Mine does it when I back it out of the drive way but normal driving it is not even noticed.

 

Tires are 245/60s

 

Trac Loc is the Ford name for a clutch type differential.

Posi is known as a G.M. clutch type differential.

Detroit Locker has no clutches, it has splines to engage both wheels to pull when needed.

I felt you needed a little "heads up" on differentials....

 

It depends only on your budget and your intentions..

I beg to differ on the Detroit Locker - I have one. They have been just fine to drive for some time now. The "sof-loc" model (3.70 and smaller) is nearly undetectable when turning.

What ARE your intentions ? ::

 

Go for it. It'll keep you from having to replace ONE tire every four months.

 

Then that 215 feet is all that more impressive! Get the t-loc and harness that power!

 

I was thinking about making a new thread, but since it relates to this post I will post it here.

I also need a posi for my stang. Since the 8" posi units are hard to find in the junkyards, where is a good place to get one at a reasonable price? I am still a student, so money is an issue. I also want some lower rear gears.. let me know where a good but low cost place is (if there is one).

 

This black mark came from a nine inch rear. I am still trying to find a place to get parts or a whole 8" posi for my vert though, so If I find one I'll let you know

Check on ehay, there is a guy selling rebuilt trac lok 8" centers for $395 buy it now with 3.40s or $299 with 3.00s

Sean, I realize you have offered your services, and If I could find one of those (CHEAP DEALS) yeah, I would buy it!!! When I first posted I was looking for info and then I started looking for parts. And what you came back with was I'll rebuild the posi or the chunk. Thats not what I asked for and still haven't. If I need someone to rebuild it I would have gotten in touch with you when you first contacted me. What I wanted was a little info, I got that. Now I am looking for some parts I haven't found them yet. But I will and I'll rebuild the rear myself. I have done everything on this car myself and am not going to give in because its a rear. I have a cousin who would rebuild it for nothing if I wanted to go that way.

I'm just trying to help out a fellow VMFer and if you had told me what you really needed and that you wanted to DIY then I'd offer up the parts just like I am now. what I don't have I can at least tell you where to get it. :: the offer is there, and no need to be rude about it.

 

You won't leave such nice straight lines with posi.., uh, limited slip.
Your rear end will go one way and then another trying to get ahead of your front end. Might be scary (certainly can scare SWMBO anyway)!
