Timing Cover Crank Seal

Hello - changing the cam in my 289, seem to have wiped a lobe clear. Anyhow, its all apart and going back together now, didn't want to change the cam but it's been kind of fun.

So I have read that some people use the crank shaft seal that installs from front side of timing cover as an update/upgrade so it can be replaced in the future with timing cover on. Part number 2692 (standard part number for multiple manufacturers). I was planning on using this instead of the fel pro oil seal that came with timing cover kit and installs from back of timing cover. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any clearance issues when putting balancer back on? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Works just as well as the other style and is easier to remove since it has a lip on the outside. Although its not necessarily needed, I apply a paper thin coat of gasket maker/sealer on the outer diameter of the seal before installing as an extra measure. Other than that, coat the inside diameter with some grease or motor oil for seamless installation and you are good to go! Balancer should have plenty of clearance on the back side. Best of luck!

I had not heard about that, what type of timing cover is needed? I bought a new timing cover from Cali Pony Cars - aluminum. It is slightly different than the original one I removed, it has longer holes for the bottom bolts that mount the timing cover to the front of the engine. Thanks for the info.

Look at the hole for the crank. The position of the "lip" to stop the seal will determine if it installs from the front or the rear.

Yup. Pretty sure all the new timing covers now being made for 65-69's feature the seal being installed from the front.

Not a problem you'll need to face because your TC isn't installed yet but here's a tool I fabricated years ago to press that
seal into place when the Timing Cover is already installed on the engine....
