Visit from code enforcement officer - my new hobby is metal sculpting

This morning the code enforcement officer took a walk through my garage. I had the 65FB under a car cover, which he did not remove. The 69FB was next to it. I moved ALL of my welding related tools and paint guns and related tools into the house. I also moved all of the parts from the 65FB into the house, as well as the spare air hoses and even the wheeled work tray I use to pull up next to a car when working on it. The mufflers and headers came off the parts rack and went into the house, as well as the replacement sheet metal for the 69. I had all my woodworking tools prominently displayed and the guy could not avoid squeezing past my huge powermatic table saw. There was no dust on the floor, nor any crumbling seam sealer or other debris from the stang.

He walked in, stayed there about 90 seconds, and said it's too stuffy let's go out to the driveway. He asked whether I was doing any welding, but I changed the subjectd. Later, I mentioned that there was no welder in the garage and he replied that he could see that there was no welder in the garage. We chatted a bit about various things, including applicability of the campaign contribution limits under the Political Reform Act to indian tribe contributions to various candidates, plus the applicabilityh of the Brown Act to the meetings of the local city council where I live. I had enough stories from my legal work to keep him intrigued by that and off the topic of the cars. He never looked at the back yard where Sac69 and I sweated out 8 hours of work over the weekend.

I told him that I was going to take up a hobby of metal scuplture and would be grinding, sawing, pounding, etc. in connection with my new hobby. Thus, if he receives any more complaints, I hope he associates the complaint with metal sculpting. I am planning at this point in trying to get the municipal code changed. I'll start by attending a city council meeting and offering revised language and if that doesn't work, start a petition drive.

Later today I will prepare a handout for my neighbors dealing with noise and explaining that I am now sculpting metal for artistic pieces to display in my home and give as gifts to family and friends. Thus, if they hear any grinding noises, those noises will be in connection with my sculpting and not auto repair. Needless to say, when I work on my "metal sculpting" the garage door will be closed.

I guess he upside of all this is that it forced me to clean up the backyard and get the second stang into the garage.

What a PIA.

Oh, Polina had me pick up a different Russian girl today, for the trip to their work. This girl, Lena, is younger and believes in applying liberal doses of perfume. Kind of like being around an elderly aunt, as far as the scent goes.

I always thought that vintage Mustangs were works of art.

Good thinking: Hey, do you have any pics of your garage before and after, as well as a pic of all the welding stuff in your house? I just think it'd be funny to look at. I personally have no experience with welding, but is it safe to weld in an enclosed area?
P.S.
I know some people up in Sac that would sign your petition in a heartbeat, if you're interested...

Now that's uncalled for. ;)

"In addition, the code enforcement group is working on amendments to the nuisance and administrative code that will provide additional tools for the officers to ensure compliance with regulatory codes, and giving the officers the ability to abate nuisances if timely compliance is not achieved. Draft revision of the Reno Municipal Code, to be presented to the City Council at a later date, is underway to adopt the International Property Maintenance Code which prohibits major vehicle repairs outdoors. Another strategy is a proposed amendment to the city's nuisance ordinance that will allow the city to bill property owners for abatement of junk vehicles. To support that code enforcement staff is seeking contract proposals from tow companies to support removal of junk vehicles from private property. Code enforcement officers are also working with the Reno Police Department to remove abandoned vehicles from public property."

Be glad that none of the neighbors or code enforcement folks are Mustang owners. Would really suck to have this site brought up during this.

No matter where you live, there is usually some sort of noise ruling that could come into play. A lot of it is dependant on the neighbors and their life style also. I have been on both sides of the noise and it is not fun either way. Lived in military housing for a number of years and I restored/rebuilt many cars for others. In military housing, to many complaints could mean out of housing PLUS out of the military. Did a lot of "convincing" to the military authorities as to minor maintenance. Did you know that R&R of a VW motor can fall under minor maintenance. lol

Glad to see it is working for you and you have the right idea to get the codes changed. I just want to see pictures of your metal work (a fender) hanging on the walls of your living room.

Good luck with this.

Darn, forgot about the girls, yes, pics there too!!!!!

I have pictures of fenders on a rack in my sunroom, plus other body parts scattered around the room. I have the car hood leaning against the wall in my hallway. Yes, I live alone. No pictures of the welder, etc., in the bedroom.

As for welding in an enclosed area - you don't really want to breath fumes from welding so some air movement is good. with MIG welding, the only gas you use is argon or an argon mixture. This is an inert, non-flammable gas used to shield the area you are working on, keep it from receiving welding splatter so as to run clean beads. I would not want to use a torch in my garage with the door closed. In fact, it violates the safety code to even have a tank of ac. gas stored in your garage. If it blew, it would take down your entire house.

I have pictures of my entire 68 plus new parts in my game room, engine in the kitchen but it was so I had room to blast and paint the frame and engine bay.

Those new code enforcements see like ideas from socialists. Everyone has to be exactly the same, if your different, we'll punish you.

ok, if Lena wants to pose naked on my hood along with Polina, Anastasia, 2 Katja's, 2 Mascha's and Natasha, that can probably also be arranged.

Hey, if you need a signatures, bring it by my office. Since I work in West Sacrmento, that should be good for something right? I mean I hate leaving the office with quiet city streets. I want to hear grinding, and air ratchets, and impact guns when I leave the office.

Anyone that's familiar at all with West Sacramento, knows just how ludicrous this is. There's basically one nice part of the city, where 70sportsroof and Sac69 live. Despite a ten year effort to clean it up, the rest of this city is still the arm-pit of the world, and probably the homeless person capital of the world!

Not like a dog catcher, its more like a people catcher. I dealt with them before we moved last year, but the one I dealt with was a Mustang fanatic so no problems there. My neighbor at the old house turned me in saying I was running an auto repair shop, when they got to the house and looked around all they could find were Mustangs and all of them were registered to me. I did have way too many at the time, 5 is too many when you also have everyday drivers and a two car garage.

aw---I love the country more and more each day, I might not have the comforts or economic oppurtunities the large cities have to offer but I have almost no restrictions (within the law )--
I feel for you, I lived 10 years in a tiny town and could not get along with the neighbors.

Yup, my uncle, who was an auto mechanic, lived there and his sister and her husband had a service station there (WestSac) from way back in the late 40's. All dead and gone now, but I remember that area well. Just a few bright spots in an otherwise rundown area, even 30 years ago.

On-topic, just the mention of Russian names brings back all those good fragrance memories from when I was in Ukraine. The women smelled just lovely, perhaps to drown out some of the other smells of the city. They sure did brighten up my day, in more ways than one :D

Glad everything worked out. Good luck with the sculpture hobby ;)

So very glad to hear you didn't get into trouble!

I understand the pressure you must have felt, though....we have similar codes here, and I was in a tough spot of reporting my WELDER stolen while my car was on jack stands in the DRIVEWAY. I leaned the wheels up against the car in a lame attempt to hide the fact, but the officer never noticed. Was so enamored with the car he called the other three officers on duty to look at it! (yes, small town)

Good news that you made it past the inspection, and good luck with the petition.
