I wanted to see if anyone could answer this question. I have an 130amp alternator with an internal voltage regulator. This is hooked up to a MSD 6AL box, MSD Blaster 2 coil, & MSD Pro Billet Dist w/ magnetic trigger.

I recently had the voltage regulator go bad & I was told it was a quality piece, plus it was new. Does anyone know what would make this go bad?

Should I be slapping a filter somewhere? It doesnt show any filters added inline on my MSD instructions. I'm not sure if I would somehow be getting feedback through the system or voltage spikes.
 
I ran much the same ignition system on my 289 for years with abolutely no problems.

Is there any reason you think the voltage regulator failure had something to do with the ignition?

I don't know what your setup is like...but if the alternator is getting its ground through the engine...you need to check your ground strap. I have (on another car) had a voltage regulator go bad when the ground strap rusted in two.

Not sure what caused the problem. It's an all new system. I havent gotten any road time on the car yet & the alternator was new as well with about 1-2 hours run time. The battery cables are both 2-gauge. Battery negative goes to the block & then on the back side I have a new 4-gauge braided ground strap from the block to the frame.

It cost me $71 to replace the internal voltage regulater. I'm just wodering if theres something I'm missing so I dont have to go down this road again. Thanks for the reply.
 
Internal electronic regulators go bad a lot more frequently than good old stock mechanical ones. Probably heat related. You hear about it a lot more on cars like ours because of the mods we do that the car was never designed for. They work well on stock cars because they are doing exactly what they were designed for. I recently had the stock alt rebuilt on my 03 Cobra. They have a bad rep for failing because they are off-the-shelf Ford parts stuck in a high heat engine compartment in a spot they don't get a lot of vent air.
