What exactly do I need to build an Aod that can hold 800hp?

I've read just about all I can on the subject, but I am still confused.

I just built my first AOD for an import, and it really wasn't any harder than the C4's or C6's I'm used to.

I have a 1980 Aod. The problem I'm having is what EXACTLY do I need to hold 800hp?

From what I have read the one piece input shaft is mandatory, as well as bigger servo's, bands, and red line clutches. Also, if I go to a one piece input shaft, then I have to buy a custom converter, and loose my lock up capabilities...correct?

I know that I will have to change output shafts to a later model for oiling to the rear. What years will fit? Can I use one from a 4r70w?

I really don't want to convert to a 4r70w due to the electrical change over kit being beyond my budget. Can't I just buy upgraded AOD parts, or swap some from the 4r70w?

What about the mechanical diode? Do I need this, can it be swapped to the early AOD.

What about the cast iron drum on my tranny, can I upgrade to the stamped steel unit?

Also, I have been installing shift kits into C4's and C6's for years with no problem, and recently into the import Aod. Since I'm going to be using the one piece shaft I will have to go full manual vb {from what I have read}, how hard is this to build? Who makes the best kit?

Sorry for the long post, as you can see I am confused over what I need.

Tnanks for the info. Lol, I didn't think about it when I wrote "import AOD", like someone said above, it was just a general description of an import overdrive automatic tranny.

I could buy a core 4r70 and just change the guts, but I can't really get a clear answer on that yet.

Looks like you could build the AOD with the 4r70w, and use a built AOD valve body without going electric.

Silver Fox was the one who told me not to get rid of the AOD......

Hmm..."Any Casting that is E0 (1980) is worthless." posted by Silver Fox, ClickClick forums, under the AOD 101 sticky.
I get the sense that you have not been reading up on this project as suggested.
Gypsy, I know your not trying to be a jerk, but here is another recent reply that the man gave me for an answer to this question.

"Holding this power take some considerable knowledge and experience. But the long and short of the issue is drop a 1998+ 4R into the AOD case, one peice shaft, manaul vb, upgraded clutches, and increase clutch count with some machine work. As for the VB, there is no KITS out there that are able to hold over 500 hp. "

I can't find it just now, but he did say that the AOD can be built just as good as the 4r70W. If I'm going to change the guts to a 4r then it really don't matter what year the case is.

He answered my question about putting the guts of a 4r70w into the AOD case. I will probably buy one of his manual valve bodies, and a one piece shaft, along with a good kit with redline clutches, and a good converter and be done.

If you read my first post then you will that I did ask about changing the guts of a 4r70w as I wasn't clear {hence the question} if that was possible since the 4r is electric.

Dan, answered my question about the 4r, which cleared up a few things for me. I have been reading that site nearly all of this year, but like I said I had a few more questions.

Sorry that I don't know it all like you seem to, but I always like to hedge my bets by posting a question on as many related forums that I can. Even though this isn't a paint forum there are plenty of "how to I paint my car" questions here everyday.

There are quite bit of knowledgeable people on this forum that have built their own transmissions a well as other car related parts. I am always amazed the intelligence of people who have answered some of my posts in the past. Some of these people are very gifted in many areas of fabrication, and mechanics.

Besides its not for you to say where I can or can't post no more than it is my business to tell you.

Oh ,and thanks again for all of the replies to everyone who tried to help.....

Tremec TKO 600.....lol. Seriously, for me I think its the best way out, or build another C4 with Nascar type gears for the highway.
