And why is it different from a standard manual transmission?

A little info about a "Toploader". A Toploader is more than just a transmission that loads the gears from the top. It is the name of the Ford design 4 speed manual transmission. Even though the 3 speed loads the gears from the top it is generally understood that when people refer to a Toploader they are talking about the 4 speed tranny.

They got the name Toploader because the 4 speed used before the T&C (Transmission and Chassis) 4 speed was available was the Borg Warner T10, which is a side loader. So, when the T&C became available it became known as the Toploader.
