What is the trick to compress the coil spring on a 66 ??

A 2 hr job has progressed to a 2 day job and still not completed. I got the coil springs out to install the new Front End rebuild kit. I used the standard spring compressor (one screw shaft with hooks on top and bottom) to get them out. Now, when I try to compress the spring and put it back in, the end of the bolt extends below the end of the compressed spring and hits the saddle. What the heck am I doing wrong?? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Turn the compressor upside down. Simple, and effective.
